Great ‘Cheap Sports Tickets' Hunt

The cost of watching your favourite team play can be huge: a trip to the footie for a family of four can often run into £hundreds. So I want to tap MoneySaving sports fans for ways to show expensive tickets the red card, whether it’s footie, rugby or other sports.

How can you cut the cost of season and matchday tickets? Is it cheaper to watch early rounds rather than more popular matches? Are there ways to save on food and drink while you’re there?

Please click reply to share your top cheap sports watching tips.

Don't go and watch Man Utd when you live in Surrey, go to your local team.

The top Premier league games will always be sold out and difficult to get tickets for, the same as the European games. With cup games you may be luckier but bear in mind that most top teams put out 'reserve' teams, so your chances of seeing the stars are reduced.

At most leagues from the Blue Square Prem down, you can have a pint while watching the game, stand with your mates, rather than sit with a load of wallies, swap ends at half-time, while munching on a reasonable priced and tasty pie and have a natter to the centre half in the bar afterwards.

And you'll probably get change from £20

My sport is horses. And I volunteer as a cross country jump judge (to say yay/nay as whether the horse got over the jump succesfully or not)
Its brilliant. Its a free day out. I take my mate along to 'help'. They provide food & drink all day for us. I have seen some top names (although not had one fall off at my jump yet ...:) )
only downside is that you have to stay all day and in any weather
and I am sure the 'volunteering' principle could be applied to lots of sports

As far as football is concerned the only way I know to save money on food is to not buy it in the ground.

As for tickets I can only speak for Aston Villa but they often do deals for cup games against less well known opposition where you buy tickets for two games and it's a £5 cheaper than buying individual tickets. They also occassionally do offers when they don't think the ground will be full, e.g. against Middlesborough this Sunday you can get a family ticket for two adults and two children for £30.

The other thing to look at is https://www.seatexchange.com, they sell season ticket holders seats if they can't attend and are a little cheaper than the full price.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • If you want to watch sports for free or for a very nominal fee, check out the Britih American Football League at http://www.bafl.org.uk for American football games that take place across the country.
  • i know reading are always advertising for helper at their games on gumtree, so may be worth havinga look and get paid while watching a semi decent team play football.

we go to watch rugby and take a flask of tea in with us to save money. also eat befor you go in e.g a local chippy they are cheaper than in the grounds.

You can't drink alcohol in view of the pitch at Blue Square Prem level. I think it is possible at the level below (north/south divisions) but I could be wrong about that.
  • Yes I have to agree with one chap on the forum that Aston Villa do some great deals on football tickets.

Also I am a season ticket holder at Yeovil Town which is also great value for money.

Support your local team first and when they are away from home, go and see the Premiership side you support.

Handy that Villa and Yeovil were only at home at the same time twice last season!!!

  • For the parents! I fondly remember being taken by my Dad to Wembley to watch my beloved Newcastle United for the '99 FA Cup Final... only to set up a camp directly outside the stadium walls with a radio/picnic combo.

Obviously it wasn't the same as being inside, I felt conned and he endured years of abuse because of it. However! The atmosphere before the match along with clearly audible crowd noises during made it a day well worth going for. Cheap day out, a 2-0 loss and I'm still remembering it as amazing, top man.

That or follow the example of Stoke fans at the Britannia Stadium and find a viewpoint outside the ground. I've seen quite a few games from that sort of position around the country. Sometimes cramped, restricted view but football's football!
