Free Norton Internet Security 2009

I have just received a link from a major software reseller for a free copy of "not for resale" Norton Internet Security 2009. Norton products are usually licenced for one year. The site does not restrict this offer to resellers, just goto http://www.emea.symantec.com/uk/nortonchallenge/request-an-nfr.html and fill in the details. THE CATCH is that you must enter name & address (they'll post CD I think), email (for the key I presume) and you have to agree to your details being passed on. This will almost certainly result in both junk email (add it to your spam filter) and probably junk 'real' mail. Personally, I have no problem with recycling junk mail or adding the junk emails to a spam list, you can always use a throw away email address from the likes of hotmail, yahoo, etc. This is a £40 product for free (note- not for resale - you cant sell it on). If the notion of receiving junk mail is too much to bear then this is not an offer to take up, but for the rest its a great offer. Not sure if this is the usual 3 PC licence (£40) or restricted to one. :money:
Freebies you don't really need can be given to your local Hospice Charity shop so they can raise funds they desperately need. Pass on your good fortune :A

Am I missing something? can't see anywhere is says this is a free product0

Form asks for a company name and address...0
-
doesn't necessarily say _your_ company name though.0

I would avoid Norton at all costs. Just because its a well known name, it does nothing more then numerous free products already do, and it's prone to slowing your computer down too.0

Just some info to read BEFORE you install norton...
1) Its ffree for 12 months only then you will have to upgrade the software...so its not free forever
2) once it runs out its extremly hard to completly remove norton
3) If your not an experienced PC user you will be spammed by security alerts from norton, which is scary for alot of users
Having said that, if youve had norton 2008 and required to upgrade then this is a good little offer.
Its not a bad program but there are totally free firewall/antivirus software out there that is just as good and far less intrusive.0 -
i wouldnt touch norton with a bardge pole as been mentioned by another poster it causes no number of problems with peoples computers and blats their hard drive and memory - avoid like the plague0

Thanks.
It's worth giving this a try. Rumour is that 2009 is a lot less bloated than previous editions, so I'm keen to try it and see if it's true.
Don't know if the comments made by other people relate to the 2009 edition - would be interested to know and qualify accordingly.0 -
With regard to Norton slowing down computers, the 2004 version was the big culprit. Unfortunately for them, people have stuck with this opinion. I have had Norton for 5 years and found it better each time. The 2008 version certainly doesn't have this problem. The only downside is that the update service does hog bandwidth whilst it downloads updates, but with broadband, this is usually done in seconds. The 2004 version slow down was mainly caused by the service ccSvcHst.exe which was the problem file. They still use it, but greatly enhanced. I agree that other products are available free, but as someone that spends many hundreds of hours per year sorting out other peoples infected computers - ( I am not an IT expert but studied computer scences in the early eighties on a pc the size of a porta-cabin and stay up-to-date as much as I can) - I know that Norton's virus detection engines are beyond doubt unbeatable. No - I don't work for them . Reviews from the trade magazines for the last couple of years state that. Norton only loses out on the fact it isn't free (except for this year they have done the NFR offer)
Removal of Norton is actually quite simple. Try downloading the Norton Removal Tool. It completely removes all files and registry entries.
Norton isn't cheap. But I don't mind paying for the security of a product that constantly hits the top of the charts for virus detection and removal.
People knock Microsoft all the time - I hate their prices too - but where would computing be today without Mr Gates. Linux and Mac lovers will swear by their systems, but Windows has led us to a state they'd never have reached. (including going bald and grey --- lol)
So, lets not knock a product needlessly. If you haven't had Norton for 4 years, you have your chance. It's a 1 year licence. After the year, remove it (use the norton removal tool). Its free - that's what this forum is for after all.
With regards to the link - NFR in the link stands for Not For Resale. It's a freebie us resellers get. Usually they post me a CD - as do all the others - I test them all with a multitude of nasties and recommend them to my customers. Not all choose Norton - I'll end up fixing those that don't. The 15 day trial mentioned above is the same product, but after 15 days will expire. You'll have to pay up or remove it. The link I have provided gives a 1 year 'Trial' (sic)Freebies you don't really need can be given to your local Hospice Charity shop so they can raise funds they desperately need. Pass on your good fortune :A0
