The problem with some of these larger banks - be it HSBC, Santander, RBS, Lloyds, whoever - is that no one truly knows how much they are exposed to all these derivatives and so on and some even think the banks themselves do not truly know.

Also, the sums being bandied about are simply breath-taking - the latest is something like 180 TRILLION dollars worth of bad derivatives out there in the markets. I have no idea what exposure any UK bank has to this but I do realise it is enough to wipe them ALL out let alone one.

With regards to Santander - anyone know how exposed they are to the Spanish housing bubble? Anyone know how exposed they are to the UK bubble via Abbey? What about all this stuff going on in the US with subprime and Alt-A mortgages bundled up and sold off - how exposed are Santander to all of that???? Anyone????????????????????????
This is not financial nor legal nor property advice. Consult a paid professional if in doubt.

  • I see I was rather optimistic with my 'search on Google' comment. Even Google Malaysia brings up Daily Mail as a first result if searching the 'whole web.'

I work for a non-company, and get somewhat different results, since their servers are located outside the UK. Issue closed.

What's a 'non-company' and why does that stop you from using Google at home?

In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

I don't know why people say "I don't understand X" instead of using Google, asking what X means, or if they can't be bothered doing either of those, posting a message saying

    Oh - you did.

And since other have replied about it, I find your claim 'nobody can understand' a little specious.

Rather than potentially thousands of people having to google the word why don't you do the decent thing and save them the trouble. It just seems hugely selfish not too, especially when it only saves you about 5 key depressions, less work than actually having to google it. So apart from that I have no problem with it.
The only other thing I found weird and annoying in your post was that you made
a quote of something which was never said by anyone, again rather strange.
I think you need to learn the difference beteen denigration and self-denigraion.
I just pointed out the obvious.

When you put money in a bank, you become a creditor.
The same as any limited company that you may give money up front to,who can,if they run into financial difficulty,'walk away' with your money safely deposited in an off shore account or spent on a villa in Marbella.
There is insurance upto £35k,which, for the vast majority of people, is more than enough.

People should be less worried about that possibility and more worried about the loss of purchasing power of what ever money or future income they have.

At 'the click of a mouse' ,subject to approval, the US banking system will create $700,000,000,000.
But what value do you put on a mouse click ?
Maybe a few mouse clicks ?

No 'true' wealth has been created.
    It's a joke...virtual money!!!!!!!!
They don't even have to buy the paper like they did in 1929.
It gets closer to Zimbabwe each day (1,000,000 % inflation)
Google the Weimar to see what happened with hyper inflation in Germany.

£2 for a loaf of bread in 2010.It will happen.
