I haven't touched "plastic ham" for years...I roasted quite a few gammon joints for using as ham but had several duff joints in a row from the supermarket which put me off, so ham generally hasn't been on the menu for a while now...You lot have inspired me to try it again, thanksDFW no.554 - Proud to be dealing with my debts :TDAVID TENNANT CAN PROBE ME WITH HIS SONIC SCREWDRIVER ANYTIME...:AFLYING THE FLAG FOR THE CAMBRIDGE BOOTS TARTS :happyhear0

After reading this thread last year, I'm still a 'home made ham' convert! I bought myself a small electric slicing machine and it does the job beautifully.Mortgage Free as of 03/07/2017 :beer:0

Is this for just cooked meat or would defrosted pre-cooked meat be the same??0 -
How long will it keep in the freezer? Just wonder if it would keep for a month as I am thinking of cooking a ham joint for DS who is at uni as he spends a fortune on plastic ham and definitely prefers a cooked ham joint which we often have at home but we always eat it the day it is cooked or the day after. Have never frozen it, just concerned that it would probably last him for about a month's sandwiches and don't want to make him ill.0

Meat can however deteriorate in quality (texture/freezer burn/flavour not as good and so on ) if left in the freezer for too long. One month should be fine though.

I am thinking of maybe doing this in September when I move into a house. Would it be as economical to get a joint for just one person?0

yes because once cooked you can freeze in small packs, i freeze in packs of 2 slices. when i was living on my own i always found packs of ham went off half way through.
i pulled out the cloves before slicing for the ham that i then froze, the rest was torn up and eaten mixed with rice and peas, served with new potatoes, or eaten on it's own when my husband disappeared into the kitchen!
SOO much nicer than anything bought pre sliced or from the deli counter, and cheaper! woo.0 -
If it helps I've sampled a "ready roasted" lump of ham from Mr T.
Now I'm sure it's moulded/reformed BUT it said 96% pork (rest being yes salt, preservatives etc) and was 4.50 (sorry no pound sign on keyboard).
Factor in the cost of a gammon joint (6 pounds up) plus cost of gas in my rubbish cooker... it seemed worth a go.

I worked it out - you must have accidentally put an i instead of a u :rotfl:Gave me a giggle anyway, trying to work out what you'd written originally."...And if it don't feel good, what are you doing it for?" - Robbie Williams - 'Candy'0 -
I am soooo gunna bumpetty-bump this thread as I've been recommending the sandwich ones this week
I've often thought about buying small joints to use for cold cuts, but like some other posters we like our meat well done so it falls to pieces at the sight of a carving knifeI SHALL persevere tho:cool:
