Winfixer (again!!!) *help please*

Options
Hi,

(I posted this on another thread but was advised to start a new topic.)

I clicked on the pop-up to install Winfixer last night (I KNOW!!! :o ) I stopped the install half way through but the icons appeared on my desktop. I restarted in safe mode and ran AVG, Ad aware and Spyware Doctor, all came back clear.

I've just installed and run hijackthis and I now have a notepad logfile which is incredibly long and means nothing to me.

Could someone point me in the right direction? I don't know whether I have a problem or not at this point and am stuck.

Many thanks x x x

Copy and paste your hijackthis log in here......Somethings are straight forward, something are for the more experienced hijackthis user.

You can also paste the log into this webpage, it may give you more help.

You could copy/paste the log here for a start http://www.hijackthis.de/ if anything is found just tick the box in Hijack Log results (the program you used) and select Fix Checked.

    Like So,

By going to http://www.hijackthis.de you will actually be able to see what problems there maybe on your PC its very informative.

It wont find everything but its a ruddy good start.

Thanks Intel, I've run that too but I've read that using hijackthis without expert knowledge can seriously damage your computer..... so I thought I should run it by your guys first.

So anything that comes out as 'nasty' I can check on the hijackthis thingie?

If you see a (blip) like this on your log...

    O16 - DPF: !!74D05D43-3236-11D4-BDCD-00C04F9A3B61} (HouseCall Control) - http://a840.g.akamai.net/7/840/537/...all/xscan53.cab

Just google the xscan53.cab bit of the log and youll get all the info you need
but as Ive done quite a few logs I would get rid of this particular log file
as It comes kinda recognizeable.. just self taught I suppose :)

Oh the reason I would get rid of this is because its the trend micro housecall
active X plug in and I wouldnt need it anymore.... But it can stay its not a nasty....

T4i - it's useful for a user to directly post a log to a forum lilke that - and that one is good - but just posting a log on it's own is not helpful to the analysts. They like to have some idea of what propblems the user is actually experiencing.

We can help analyse logs at this site ... there is no need to send someone to another site at this stage.

Further, it's not a good idea for a user to get advice from two different analysts as it will only confuse the situation.

Jay-Jay > please stay here. I am looking at the log and will be giving you advice on what to remove and how to do it.

Meantime .... please let us know what sort of problems you are experiencing - error messages, pop ups, browser hijacks etc.

    Hi pchelpman and thanks :)

My puter was running slowly, I was getting the 'not responding' thingie all the time and kept getting the winfixer popup (which I stupidly clicked on :o)

I thought the slowness may be to do with the fact I've been watching some streaming cams (have had three or four running at once), along with having another couple of websites running so I wasn't too concerned.

ALSO.... hubby uses Limewire () so that could be something to do with it.

I've not had any problems today since I ran all the scans last night but having Googled for Winfixer I thought that I should look into it as a potential problem.

I've fixed the files that hijackthis suggested so how do I check if my puter's clean?

As you have "fixed" some things suggested by the HJT analyser I can't work with that last log. Please rescan your computer and post a new log. Don't do anything more till I reply.

Limewire is a definite no no. Not only does your husband not know exactly WHAT he is downloading (he might think he does but he can't be sure) there is also the issue of copyright. At least two sets of parents in the UK are currently being sued for breach of copyright because their children downloaded musical tracks against copyright. They are facing bills of thousands of pounds. Look here .....

    http://www.digitalmusicnews.com/results?title=RIAA

About half way down the page ..."More File-Sharing Enforcement Action Bubbles in Britain"

Also I see Incredimail running. IncrediMail has a nasty habit of imposing itself on your PC, eating up system resources and leaving difficult-to-remove traces. An unsightly ad banner sits on the main toolbar (unless you pay £££ for the Premium version) while the heavy HTML makes messages slow to send and receive. All in all, most people don't use it and they have no end of trouble trying to get rid if it. But that one is up to you.

The point is that both these applications are sources for potential malware. Immediately the PC gets fixed up it will most likely get reinfected because of these programs.

I'll look again when you post a new log.

Also please let me know what is decided about Limewire and Incredimail.

    Hi

Umm isnt the new limewire free of rubbish (as I think it is) but its mainly
what you download should be virus checked before using.... I agree with
incredimail what a load of crap that is, it mistifies me why anybody wants
this on thier PC as its such a clunky bit of rubbish...
