Incontinence problem, removing urine smell naturally and cheaply from soft furnishing

Options
Hi folks bit of a sensitive subject here so no trolls please or witty remarks.

My 76 years old disabled Mother is currently recovering in hospital from various ailments and is expected home in around 7 -10 days and I am her carer .

Mum various ailments caused her to have slight incontinence problems before hospitaisation and allthough I have wet cleaned her reclining chair with my trusty old Hooover Aquavac ( brilliant all round machine for shammpoing etc, if you see one one a car boot snap it up , makes a Vax look feeble ) using a top rated carpet - upholstery cleaner that claims to remove odours and kill all dust mites etc, there is still a light residual smell.

The chair cost nearly £800 and is in excellant condition so replacement is not really an option.

Any sensible suggestions for removal welcome !

Try one part vinegar, five parts water in a spray bottle to help neutralize smells.

  • You might also try damping the area and then sprinkling borax on the chair, rub it in and leave for half an hour or so then hoover that off.

  • I don't know if this product has ever been mentioned on here before but Fullers Earth is almost the universal absorbant, for instance I've used it to remove spilt black Quink from a beige carpet before, find it is another matter! I get mine from an Army Surplus store where it is in little bottles and used to clean up nerve gas (True).

To use it make into a thin paste and liberally scrub it into the fabric, then leave it till it is totally dry and Hoover off. It will look as though you have wrecked the chair but it comes out very easily. Look on Google loads of info about it.

    Hope this helps.

Many thanks to the last 2 posters, will try both suggestions.

Unfortunately the seat cushions are not removable and are very thick, I actually soaked them through with the cleaner using a watering can and then vacumed from above and below until the vac stopped removing liquid so it appears that the smell is coming from deep within.

    many thanks

  • Ask the vet ! A vet told me once that the only thing to truly get rid of those smells has to be be biological - they have products but TBH biological washing liquid works just as well. I have used it on urine..vomit and even worse! It works! Poor mum x

When I got milk spilt in the back of my car which soaked deep down into the foam and smelt like rotting French cheese I tried everything to clean it off. In the end I sprayed it with 1001 "No Vac foam carpet freshener, gentle breeze". You spray it on and it leaves a thick foam which sinks in and then dries really quickly. The flowery smell is quite strong for a few days but it killed the smell of the milk and there are no odours at all now. Try a bit out in the shop first on a hanky or something to see if you like the smell. Hope it goes well with your Mum. XX

I use lavender oil in my nappy bucket to kill any smell. Dont know whether this would work but you could try it. I would try a area underneath first as I have heard it can take out the dye in material.

How about bicarb soda liberally sprinkled all over the chair and left for as long as poss and then hoover up? I have heard this suggested for wee wee mattresses.
