What to give to Halloween kids?

Options
We have neighbours kids who come knocking and if left to my husband, he would just ignore them. But I was wondering what sort of things do you give to these kids? In the past I have given some money (20p or 50p) but I feel that maybe I should give them something else? There are about 4-5 kids who call around.

Any ideas?

  • Sweets or novelty toys.

If this is the US "Trick or Treat" then money is not the usual "reward". The idea is that you give them a treat otherwise they play a trick on you. So .... sweets or the kind of cheap novelty toy that you use as a party bag filler would be ideal.

I'm not a fan of giving money as it can give the wrong impression about the event - it becomes a kind of begging thing  It's not meant to be an exercise in kids boosting their pocket money for that week :rotfl: They shouldn't be expecting money, just a "treat".

I'm giving them a few sweet treats...a bag of mixed sweeties from Teco...fizzlers, parma violets, love hearts etc...just a couple each.

I've seen a few sites with healthy options for Halloween treats instead of encouraging kids to eat loads of sugar.
Last year I gave out fruit, the kids weren't to pleased but the parents seemed reasonably happy ha ha.....;)

We have zillions come here!! i bought a popcorn machine a few years back (costco bargain) and i always make fresh popcorn - i get a couple of bags of kernals (52p at local market) and that is more than enough for the kids. Last year one said 'oh its the popcorn house' and asked if he could have 2 bags!

I bag it up in food bags and dont add any topping if they want to put sugar on at home up to them but i dont want to (not just for health reasons its messy too!)

Have no idea if we will get trick or treaters this year... We might I guess as I'm always nice to the kid across the road (and she's a sweetie) so it's a definite possibility. I might make sure I have a few bits ready just in case - I think home made banana cake (remember this is a small village and I very much doubt anyone would worry that we were going to poison any of the kids... for anyone NOT in a small village I wouldn't recommend anything home made...) - maybe some home made choccies or if I have a chance to get to the shops I might get a few sweets...

We have a small pumpkin bucket (very cheap in Asda), and we get some chocolate eyeballs also from Asda. The kids love putting their hands in the bucket and grabbing the eyeballs - very ghoulish hahaha!
