Broadband in rural location

Options
Just wondered if anyone could help. We live in a fairly rural location in the Peak District and can not get broadband through the phone line. Also our mobile reception is pretty dire inside the house.

Does anyone know of any alternatives to fixed line broadband other than mobile broadband?

Also can someone give me info on ALL the phone companies who offer mobile broadband - we have tried "3" and Orange - both don't give a good signal until we put the laptop in the car and drive about 3 miles from the house.

Any help would be sooooo appreciated as I am fed up of our wonderful dial up connection which now costs more than broadband!! We pay £15.99 per month - does anyone know of any cheaper dial up services as a last resort?

If you live in a village where a number of other households can share the costs with you, it might be worth looking into satellite broadband.

IIRC there were government subsidies a few years ago for this type of "community" installation, though they've probably been chopped by now...
  • I was working in a very small dale in n yorkshire last week and the owner was on the internet using satelite paying £15.99 per month, it was coming from somewhere else in the dale.

  • If you are unable to find a satisfactory broadband solution, have you considered ISDN, which theoretically should double your current download speed? We had it for a couple of years until we were able to get Broadband and it eased the pain a little. Only trouble was that any time there was lightning in the vicinity, it seemed to destroy the ISDN box.

isdn is a good option but if you can't get bb unlikely as you need to be within 9km of the exchange
  • Thanks for the responses everyone.

We live about 8km from the exchange but the problem (according to BT) is that there is some aluminium in the line somewhere along this 8km. Apparently at one time when copper was expensive they used aluminium instead!

Also looked at Satellite about 1 year ago but the set up costs were horrendous (about £1k) and the rentals were also about £60 per month. Looks like this might have some down now though..

Will try the cheaper dial up option someone has mentioned though - thanks.

Any more suggestions would be much appreciated.

beware that satellite BB is very fast downloads but uploads is the same speed as dialup. (you still need a phone line for uploads).
also ISDN is very expensive. only really suitable for companies. it was never designed for domestic use.
    Get some gorm.

Vodafone and O2 also offer it.
