eggs: bought 30, smashed 9

:rotfl:Hi money savers,

What's your worst experience as a money-saving wannabe?

Just thought I'd tell you how my first week as a fully-fledged grocery frugal wannabe has gone. It might make you laugh...

Friday night: Spent 2 hrs on myshopping planning meals for the week at asda which involved (nearly) every multisave offer they had on. Made list. DH took this to be a symptom over over-anxiety, and made statements of refusal to be involved in the money-saving quest. Shouted.

Went to asda at 9 (together) DH having been reassured he was only the chauffeur, not the bargain-hunter. This to get the best deals. Picked up 3 slabs of malt loaf in the reduced rack down from 89p to 20p on the yellow stickers. Good times!

Went to bakery aisle for bread, and discovered said malt loaf (not at its use-by date) at its usual price of - yes you've guessed it- 20p. Found asda lads on friday night shift, playing with the mop and bucket, and asked for help.

Amused, they ridiculed their bakery colleagues, and told us to haggle, at til. Got them for 10p. DH very concerned now that I am mad. Starts working out what we both earn per hour so he can expose the ridiculousness of all this time spent on saving 10p.

Bought all multi-save items. Tried to ask for 'smiley vouchers' for the things they'd run out of. 'sorry that's not possible'. Hmmmmn, not according to Martin.

Anyway, left feeling good. 9 days for 2 adults for 24 quid. Good times.:T

At 10.20pm while packing away, punnet of 30 eggs (cheaper to buy in bulk) takes a lemming-style decision and dives off the worktop.

Gutted! All that effort! Grrrrr! These are not words I said, but I'm sure you can imagine.

DH, now a nice man again, and seeing tearful wife helps me to sort through the eggs. 9 smashed ones, saved the goop for scramblies tomorrow, and a cake. Cleaned the rest.

Sat am. Just eaten scramblies, made garlic mayonnaise and going to make an almond cake, but thought I'd share my sad first attempts with all you experts....

L;)

Well done for being OS enough to use the eggs and not throw them as some I'm sure would be inclined to do. :T

All cakes mentioned need to be accompanied by the recipe. Its compulsory.

:rotfl: eggs is usually my trick, lady who delivers ours insists on her 8 year old carrying them to my door because I always drop at least 2 and her daughter doesn't drop any.

Running over my shopping with the car is another trick I have done before, put shopping on floor, put in boot, leave a bag on the floor by accident usually when distracted by the kids, then reverse over it :o

I've had a bag of flour make it all the way home on my roof, must be a careful driver :o when going forwards at least
One day I might be more organised...........

    Specially for Rikki, here goes::o

    beat 2 eggs
    add 150g almond powder/ground almond
add 6 desert spoons olive oil (you can use butter if you don't like the taste, but I think it works well in nutty things, and good for your heart)
    add 6 desert spoons sugar
    add 4 desert spoons flour
if flour is plain also add 1 desert spoon baking powder.

Pour/spread into a greased loaf tin and cook for 45mins on Gas 6 (check regularly, do not get engrossed on internet and rely on DH to have a sense of smell for burning)

I think it's nice, bit of a store cupboard cobble-together, but it works! DH thinks it would be nice with cocoa powder too (maybe substitute for the flour).

    Thanks all,

    L;)

There are many of us here on old style always eager to try new recipes and ideas. Your recipe will be appreciated by many. :j

Quick question: 1lb loaf tin or 2lb?

For others reading the recipe Gas mark 6 is 200c or 400f
