Newbie veg gardener! MERGED

I am trying to start this year to grow my own veg after a few years of really wanting to do it! I have no greenhouse (and no chance of getting one either). I have a small plot in back garden that I am planning to use.

Garden is east facing, not sure what type of soil. Ideally would like to grow the following (in no particular order): garlic, potatos, turnip, sweetcorn, beetroot and peas. No idea if this is realistic or too many to start with, and when to start with each. Thought I could maybe boost space with growbags?

Any idea as to where I can get ideas on what to plant where, when and what can be planted together? A starting point would be really helpful as I am starting to look at different websites but am getting a little confused!

Lets see if we can make a start then :D Garlic you can plant now :j you will find packets of three garlic bulbs in garden centres or wilkinsons, maybe other shops too, now, what you do is break open the bulbs into the little segments, these are the corms, you plant these individually, about 3" deep with the flat bit at the bottom.

Around June / July the plant above ground will start to wilt, thats when they are ready, each corm will have produced a bulb itself. :T

Potatoes take alot of room in the garden, but you can get small bags of seed potatoes in wilkinsons, about 10 seeds for 1.99, these look like potatoes themselves and can be planted in pots or a dustbin. You can use the plastic pots you buy at wilkinsons.

Never grown Turnip so can't help there.

Sweetcorn, we are going to have a go at this, but you need alot of room, somthing like a 3' square bed

Beetroot, you can plant in the ground on in pots, you can get minature plants for growing in pots if you want to do that.

Pea's you need room to make a wigwam or row of canes for the plants to grow up. Although thinking about it, I bet you could use trellis and grow them against a fence.

You don't need a greenhouse for most things unles we're talking exotic fruits. Remember you have windowsills which are behind glass, thus you have a green house for starting plants off as seeds.

Best of luck and let us know how you get on.

Carol Kline's program last week had a section on "Three sister's planting" where the same patch was used to grow sweetcorn, beans and squash. She used the corn as supports for the beans and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work for peas too and if you've only got a small plot then it might work in your favour. I'm going to be trying it this year.

The one other thing I've been told about sweetcorn is that in order to get the best chances of cross polination you need to plant in a square grid shape rather than a row.

  • Hi, I am also a newish veg gardener. Last year, we had lots of tomatoes and just 1 green pepper :D . We have a fairly small garden, or should I say that I can't give up any grass as I have 2 young sons and 2 rabbits! I will basically be trying to grow my veg in grow bags or tubs. I plan on trying to grow potatoes, carrots, parsnips, onions, leeks and garlic as well as stawberries and pumpkin for the boys. I do have 2 large tubs, like the kind you put childrens toys in. I can use one of these for the potatoes. Which would be best to plant in the other and what would be best grown in smaller pots or grow bags?

I can't believe how excited I am about gowing my own veg and composting too :rotfl:
  • Might be worth checking out Sarah Raven's new series of articles just starting in the Daily Telegraph, the 'Veg Patch'. It's also available online!!

  • I know what you mean. I have bought so many seeds this year. My first year of trying to grow from seed and grow more than just tomatoes and chilli peppers ! And I feel I am going to end up with a house full of plants as my garden is too small for a greehouse :D
But my neighbour has offered her part of out concreted back garden to grow plants. So I may have a little cottage industry going by the summer.
    Good luck with your garden

Everyone on here is so nice ,and the advice is what would have been passed down from generations ( I was not too interested in hearing about plants etc when I was ten years old , good job my mum can pass on family tips and hints) :T

You'll have a great time once you get into it - its addictive!!!

I have quite a large garden, but because I work away a lot, I only get time at the weekend to spend on it, so I have landscaped most of it and prepared four raised beds for vegetables. The majority of the garden is low maintenance, except the veg borders of course! I enjoy working on this more than any of the other garden.

Its so satisfying getting to the stage where you don't need to buy any vegetables because you are able to pick them fresh!

    Good luck!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

  • Yes my neighbours are lovely, another is getting me manure from her horse !:D
I think the payback for them is going to be the lovely display of fruit and veg in an otherwise boring back yard and fresh veg with "food feet" instead of "food miles":T
I am growing marigolds as well as they are supposed to help prevent/ attract predators for aphids so my little house is full of seedlings and some of angela loves veg paper pots !
