Skype over ordinary Mobiles!!

I'm sure Martin will like this one.
I have been fortunate enough to get on the Beta test for Mobivox.
This service allows people to make skype calls over ordinary mobile phones anywhere in the world.

Lets say you are in Spain and want to call a landline or mobie in the UK.
You call a local spanish number (on your Spanish pay as u go of course)

This will cost U about 30 euro cents a minute i expect. You are then connected to Mobivox. Having already registered, the service recognises the CLI or your mobile or whatever and even greets you by name!

You can then either give voice commands or speed dialing (as Mobivox automatically imports your Skype directory when you register). or you can just simply dial the number.

You are the connected at skype rates ie. FREE to Skype contacts :rotfl: or as per my example above. Skype out style rates to Land lines or mobiles. You have to buy credit like skype out at similar prices. You don't actually have to have skype unless you want free calls to on line skype contacts.

I think you would be hard pushed to call home from abroad on your mobile phone any cheaper than this. or to call abroad from your UK mobile. :T

Oh, and The call quality is excellent I found.

Check it out on https://www.mobivox.com

Cheers

Do you have to pay to use/join Mobivox? I looked at the site and it talked about payments being made by Paypal etc, but couldn't see what they were.

You could have used Skype with a couple of other services to call home for 2 cents a minute, but they've now corrected the tariff.

Look into other callback and calllthrough possibilities - and see Martin's article about roaming

I just bought a few dollars credit on Mobivox. I got some free initially as I was on beta test. They seem to be charging me the same rates as skype for skype out calls and calls to skype names who are on line are free.
The COOL thing is that you can ring a local access number from your mobile in loads of countries then call as though you were on yer PC. Skype don't offer that as a service.

example. calling spain from uk. Dial mobivox using free minutes in uk. call your friend no 1 on his pc for free then re dial and call friend no 2 on his landline or mobile at skype out rates. I love skype and this just means that I can take it with me on my cheapo mobile phone.

I just got back from Spain a few weeks ago and O2 Charged me £14 for a 28 min call. It's not gonna happen again. Roaming is a rip off. It's better to buy a Pay as u go sim in any country you visit and use a service like this (if there are any others that give free skype calls) alternatively if u aint bothered about skype, buy a foreign mobie and a calling card like the ones they sell here.

Can you explain how they use it to make free calls between 2 mobiles, or to Mobivox or Skype usernames? Are they using wi-fi? It says any phones. Does it use callback?

Mobivox rates for mobiles look higher than Skype rates, and other VoIP providers are cheaper than Skype.

I called my friend on his mobile in the USA using the local access number in London. The voice quality is very good.

What is not clear to me is that they are saying this local access number ( +442070996610 for London) free .

What does this free mean? Would I be charged at local/national rate or it would come out of my free inclusive minutes if I use mobile?

I used my 3G minutes and what I can see is that this use of minutes is still not reflected on my inclusive minutes.God knows whether I have to wait for a bill or it was really a total free number.

Hi, Mobivox say that the loca access number is free. I don't think that is or can be correct for mobiles and is probably a genuine mistake.(Remember that it is not just a Mobile/skype service) I have used Mobivox at home and in Portugal and it works fine. I bought a local payt in Portugal which charges .3 Euro per minure to call the Mobivox Gateway.

It doesnt use callback. Mobivox recognises the CLI (caller line identifier) or put simply the transmitted number of your mobile When you ring the Mobivox number in the country that you are in, It recognises you as a registered user so you dont have to enter a pin oeraccount number like you would on those calling cards. You can enable a security pin if you want to do so though.

When you open a Mobivox account you can get it to import your entire Skype contact list so that you can make calls to Skype contacts and Skype out contacts. If you are calling Skype users who are ONLINE at the time you can talk for FREE. all you are paying is the cost of your call to the Mobivox gateway from your foreign mobile or other registered number.
If you call skype out numbers, you are charged similar rates to Skype's 'Skype out rate' so you need credit in your Mobivox account to do this. Remember though that you don't get charged skype out by Skype as well so it's great value for money.

ANY mobile works with this, No Wifi 3G etc required. It's Cheap, Low tech at the client end and Bloody clever I think. I thoroughly recommend this.

It's also good for ringing abroad from the UK using the UK Mobivox gateway.

Hope this clears up most questions.

    Check out https://www.mobivox.com

    Cheers,
    Nigel

In other words, it's a callthrough account like calling cards, doesn't have free calls despite all the multiple uses of the word, and is distinguished from other operations by also being able to call Skype?

Perhaps you might look into callback services after all, as you'd be able to call UK from a Portuguese mobile for from 12 cents a minute.

o2 charge £5 a month for roaming in spain so if call was incoming it should been free or £7 plus £5 month charge = £13

time call them & recalculate bill me thinks !

I think they've rather overdone the word free - you'll still pay for the phone call to the access number

And I'm assuming that the username needs to have been set up in advance, as otherwise it's tricky to dial letters down the phone.
