Another vote here for dried mushrooms. And the packs of fresh wanton squares - handy for making ravioli too!4 May 20100

Hi all - Does anyone know of any Chinese Supermarkets in or near Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire area?:rotfl: :rotfl:
Quite keen moneysaver......0 -
Adding to the cookware vote, a lot of them, certainly the big one I used to visit in Manchester called Wing Fat have frankly unbelievably priced and yet top quality woks, chopping boards, cleavers and other utensils.
The one I now use in Croydon (forget the name, sorry) is a bit smaller than Wing Fat but has the fabulous advantage of a live seafood tank … pick your lobster.
If you can store them, also big frozen blocks of uncooked prawns, rice wine for cooking. Like the other posters I always get a ton of soy which again, is so cheap you have to look twice.
Also, I like them for having products I can’t get elsewhere without a trip into Chinatown (which I love to do but can’t always fit in) e.g. Lime leaves (my Waitrose used to do them stopped some time ago) which luckily freeze very well so you can buy a big bag. Also Palm sugar and Nam pla (fish sauce).
I’ll stop there because I’m going all “thai” but you get my drift. My eyes! The goggles do nothing!0 -

Thanks so much for all your replies everyone. I was a bit fed up yesterday as i was unwell and couldn't get out to the supermarket. Really glad now though as i've got loads of ideas! Writing a list for my visit. Off to find a thai recipe. Is Chinese or Thai food good for diets?0

Nothing I can add about the virtues of a Chinese supermarket - expcept the one in Croydon is called Wing Yip. They're brilliant places.
