i have one but only use it for heating up milk for my daughters bed time bottle. i used to use it for everything, but since having children i use it less and a few months back ours broke , so i heating milk up in boling water and that sorted it.
i guess it depends on how much u use your microwave and what u cook in it. most things that get done in a microwave can be done in an oven but may just take slightly longer.0 -
it's dead easy. i've got one but only use it for warming honey when i'm cooking. Can't think of anything else i'd use it for, except maybe the odd jacket spud.0

We have a microwave and I only use it for 2 things: reheating my cups of tea and heating baked beans. I suppose it depends on how dependent you are on it though.I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....0

What on earth do you use it for - I've had one on the side gathering dust for ages now - Only ever use it if the butter's too hard when I get it out the fridge - LOL
Everything goes in or on the gas cooker. It's just as easy to wash a saucepan as it is a microwave dish.Noli nothis permittere te terere

I have a habit of rolling on the floor and saying "A girl could die of thirst around here" (Don't ask! lol) and it induces DH to make me a cup of tea. I also have a habit of forgetting to drink it for 20 mins by which time it's freezing....I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....0 -
Hi overdrawn,
Welcome to MSE
I'm sorry to hear that your microwave has died. I'm afraid I only use my microwave for heating/reheating things, so I probably can't help much.
If you can give us some ideas of what you usually use your microwave for, I'm sure that you will get lots of replies of alternative ways of cooking.

I use if for defrosting, roasting, grilling, making sauces , scrambled eggs, porridge, poaching salmon, heating wheat bag, making jelly , custard, semolina , rice and many other things so sympathise with you. Oh I even make jam in summer time in it but hey some people don't rate microwaves much. Should mention mine is a combination oven and its fantastic0

Are you sure you can't replace it? You can pick one up new for around £25 nowadays. Argos are selling a decent one here: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4005513.htm
Aldi/Netto/Lidl also have good deals on them from time to time.
One of the coolest uses I've found of my microwave is making instant cups of tea. No need in waiting for the kettle to boil, just fill up a mug with cold water, pop in a teabag, and you've got a brew ready in less than a minute...0 -
We don't have one. We only ever used it for defrosting bread but since we got a breadmaker bread doesn't stay around long enough to need freezing in the first place!
If you use if for defrosting, all you need to do is be organised enough to take the stuff out of the freezer in plenty of time for it to defrost on its own. If you use to heat stuff up, can you just use an ordinary pan or the oven?May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0
