From 6 May, Marks and Spencer will be charging 5p per plastic bag that is used to shop for food, in-store at all UK stores as part of its new environmental initiative.
In the meantime it's possible to pick up a 'free bag for life', worth 10p with every food transaction between 6 April and 5 May. After this bags for life will cost 10p again but will be replaced free of charge. Read the full press release.

When they announced they were going to give away free bags before they started charging, it was to be those extra-sturdy plastic bags -- not nice cotton ones. Has anyone actually been in to M&S that can tell us which bags are given out?0
