hi purps, i think we are allowed to write a written thank you if the comp posted is still on the first page, once it has gone off the first page i think it's not supposed to be bumped just to say thank you, that's what i have been led to beleive on here anyway, if i'm wrong i'm sorry, perhaps a BG could claryfy these things for us
i think we are really only supposed to bump it if there is a question to ask relating to the comp
this is in the comping guide ..

Is there a gentler way to flag up that someone has made a mistake?
Sometimes, unfortunately, what is meant & what actually comes across, when communicating with just words, is very different. Things can be taken the wrong way & members can become upset. A quick message droped into a thread by someone trying to help but also trying to get on with entering their comps can (at times) appear abrupt & rude to the recipient.
With that in mind, Cheeky Chicken has made a few smilies which can be used for highlighting an issue in a more fun way. She has also said these are now public property & can be used whenever the need arises. Thanks Cheeky!
Examples of the gentle smilies:Useful when perhaps a newer comper decides they have to post a personal thank you message for each comp, as well as hitting the 'Thanks' button
Perhaps if someone is posting a few comps which are already on here & thereby creating a situation where other compers could get disqualified from the comp for entering more times that the T & C allows.
Let other compers know you've found a duplicate so they don't potentially enter it again and that you have sent a merge request to a Board Guide all in one easy step! Just don't forget that the thread will still need the URL of the Original thread so people can check to see if they have already entered.
This can be used to help show another comper there is a Comping Guide thread & that there are some useful hints & tips, especially to do with searching for comps which are already on MSE.
'Bumpers' can be really frustrating for other Compers, especially when they have pulled a very old thread back through to the front by adding a comment like 'Thanks!' or 'Entered this one!'

I think that's right korky - I suppose strictly speaking the rule is not to type thanks, just click the thanks button, but as the rule is there to stop people bumping old competitions back to the front page, it doesn't affect anything if someone posts a 'thanks' within a couple of hours of the comp being posted.
It's certainly not different rules for different people, just different rules for old and new comps!Al Mac Appreciation Society (AMAS) member # 6½

So - an "unwritten rule" to contradict a "written rule".
Shouldn't it be just the written rule to save confusion. If, like myself, you enter competitons in real time as they are entered on the board you can see the same competition come up again and again because of bumped "Thanks"
And how long is it acceptable to use the unwritten rule? One Hour? Two Hours? Five hours? If still on first page? If on second page?
Sorry - Just an opinion.
Many thanks all.#THANKYOUSIRALEX0 -
It's a shame that we can't tell tone of voice from a written post, it'd save much un-necessary offence!
Just to add my twopenn'orth, (it is still on page 1!) I too have been hacked off when I've inadverently entered a comp twice, (thus disqualifying myself,) because it's been bumped some time later by someone posting "Thanks."
The ones that also frustrate, are the magazine ones at the ends of each week, Take a Break, Chat etc. There are quite a few of them, all pretty similar, and it can be irritating to have to keep opening them to check your thanks when they're bumped so often. Sometimes over a page of just "Thanks!"
Perhaps this "Unwritten rule" could be written in to the comping guide to save ruffled feathers in future?
(Realise tho, that this would depend on folk reading said guide!)

i agree, i have said before and will say again, i dont see the point of someone typing thanks as this is bumping regardless on page 1 or not, its not allowed on other threads so it shouldnt be allowed on the itv comps or chat, thats life etc
yes there is effort that goes into doing these comps but same with everything else on this board, you cant have one rule for one thing and another rule for the rest, thanks button is there for a reason:D0 -
perhaps we should have a..
Please press the thanks buttonto show your appreciation of the post instead of writing a written 'thank you' as it often inadvertently bumps up the competition especially after it has gone from the First Page as explained in the comping guide here..

I don't think that being on the first page or not is relevant. Recently someone has been bumping threads which were months old but his "thanks" or whatever was still on the first page of the thread.
A time limit might be better. If you miss the time limit and really want to thank the poster you can always pm them if clicking the thanks button isn't enough.0 -
Maybe its time to say no thanks at all - if its a really important/great prize for someone maybe they should PM instead.
Ive been guilty of saying 'thanks' on the magazine comps before, if they are on the first page, and thats because they are so often bumped back to the first page, if ive already posted a thanks, i know ive already entered so dont need to waste my time going into it again.
Ive now decided im not going to say thanks at all, and apart from posting a new comp, the only time i will comment on a thread is to post an answer or advise its a dup - if everyone agreed that this is the way to go then people who do bump old posts cant get confussed/upset/angry about the rules!0
