I don't think that being on the first page or not is relevant. Recently someone has been bumping threads which were months old but his "thanks" or whatever was still on the first page of the thread.
A time limit might be better. If you miss the time limit and really want to thank the poster you can always pm them if clicking the thanks button isn't enough.
ETA I agree with catowen - it's never bothered me when threads are 'thanked' just after posting - only when old ones are bumped up, but I've never really done it myself.
I can see that if there are 3 or 4 'thanks' on a post and someone new to the forum types the same thing a few days later, it would seem very unfair to be told off for it!Al Mac Appreciation Society (AMAS) member # 6½

when i used to do it from a few pages back i had lots of pm's saying it wasn't the 'done' thing to do that, but they also said it was ok to post a 'thank you' if the comp was still on the first page so i've always tried to catch catowen or the op on the first pageplease be a responsible pet owner & spay/neuter your pets, too many strays & not enough homes for them sadly.0 -

This is all very sensible and level-headed today :j
I think that a simple no posting Thanks messages on the main board should suffice. With this there would be no confusion for users new or old. I suspect that some new users might not read the rules, but I imagine that they are only doing it because they see other more experienced users doing it, because it does not happen on other boards.0 -
Maybe its time to say no thanks at all - if its a really important/great prize for someone maybe they should PM instead.
Ive been guilty of saying 'thanks' on the magazine comps before, if they are on the first page, and thats because they are so often bumped back to the first page, if ive already posted a thanks, i know ive already entered so dont need to waste my time going into it again.
Ive now decided im not going to say thanks at all, and apart from posting a new comp, the only time i will comment on a thread is to post an answer or advise its a dup - if everyone agreed that this is the way to go then people who do bump old posts cant get confussed/upset/angry about the rules!
I completely agree with what you have said, couldn't have said it better myself:D
I subscribe to any threads that I have posted on (and some others) and I have found sometimes one poster will bump 3 different issues of the Real People answers I have posted (i.e. any still on the main board and not in game over) just to say thanks!
I too think that the magazine/tv comps should be no different to other comps in the bumping/saying thanks - thats what the thanks button is there for. I thought that the Compers Inn was set up for chat and that the Discussion Thread is there for queries regarding competitions - hence there really being hardly any reason for bumping (of threads:D)
I also agree that the only times that a comp should be bumped is if the question changes or the answer is possibly wrong or its a duplicate
Personally I think needless bumpings includes:
1. posts that just say thanks or thanks for posting
2. posts that say I would love this prize:D
3. posts that say game over - even if they say game over have sent a PM to board guide - I still think these are pointless - why not just send the PM to the board guide then it doesnt bump the post up the board for no reason
anyway thats my opinion:DWeight Loss - 102lb0 -

yep, that's true, should there be should be a "No Chat" as well unless it's just to ask a question about the comp as lots of other comps get bumped with comments nothing to do with the comps

In my opinion yes.
Although that is what I am doing now0 -
everyone on here is guilty of it at some time or another, ive done it loads of times, the puzzler & take a break monthly threads are the same, someone was telling someone how to post something with chat inbetween, surely that should have been in the 'comps discussions' ? seems the rules are a bit here & there for different thingsplease be a responsible pet owner & spay/neuter your pets, too many strays & not enough homes for them sadly.0

Please don't slay me for bumping
but can we bump to say "link not working" or "email bounced"?

lol, love the emoticon thingies in your post:D
Personally I dont see a problem with the 'link not working' or 'email bounced', its when you get several replies all with the same, or all saying not working for me either...etc you get the picture:D I mean all it takes is for one person to say its not working and another to say its now working:DWeight Loss - 102lb0
