Official MoneySavingExpert.com Forum Insert:
An EU-funded scheme by TravelWise, called Free Wheeling, is offering residents of specific areas of Liverpool (with low bike ownership) free bikes, equipment, repair sessions, and cycling lessons. There are no catches, but stocks are limited.
Find out if your postcode's included.
More than 3,500 postcodes qualify for the scheme. To find out if yours is one of them, download this Excel spreadsheet from the Liverpool Daily Post.
If you don't have Microsoft Excel, the spreadsheet can be viewed with Google Docs, or download the free OpenOffice suite for a free equivalent of the program. More free software can be found in the Free Office Software article.
How to apply.
To apply, just fill in your details on the FreeWheeling web page, and wait for a call. You can also call 0151 330 1253, and leave your contact details in a message.
There's no guarantee that by applying you'll get a bike since numbers are strictly limited, but since it only takes a few seconds to get your details added, it's certainly worth a go if you're in the catchment area. Plus, even if you don't, you might qualify for another element of the scheme.
Please do let us know how you get on by posting updates below.
Many thanks to SailorSam for posting this, and to welshpolarbear for the extra info.

I've just heard a bloke talking on the radio. To encourage people to get fit they are giving away free bikes in Liverpool, but only if you live in certain post codes. It was mostly around Anfield; Wavertree and Aigburth, but the might have been others.
He gave a phone number out but i was driving and could'nt get it.
If you live around there it may be worth a call to Radio Merseyside to get better details, the bloke was on the Billy Butler show.
Unfortunately, i live Prescot, so i'm out of it.

Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

I heard something about this at work yesterday too. Just googled it and found this on the Daily Post website:
http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-news/regional-news/2009/01/29/free-bikes-on-offer-in-bid-to-cut-back-liverpool-car-use-64375-22806591/
It's got a link to a spreadsheet so you can see if your postcode is included in the scheme.
For more details on scheme fill in your details on this site:

It's fairly new, I've signed up and will let you know if I get one. Thanks Sailor Sam and to everyone who said nice things about Liverpool. I'm proud of where I live but have enough common sense to realise that the city has problems but no more than other places just more publicised. It is the minority that cause problems, most of the people just want to live their lives.:A :
