A couple have been doing it for 22 years
".....The Davidsons set off from their Sheffield flat to visit a sick aunt, it was reported this week, and stopped off at the Travelodge in Newark, Nottinghamshire. They returned when the old lady died four months later – and decided to stay. After 12 years, they tried a change of scenery by moving to another, newly-built Travelodge, 15 minutes drive away, in Grantham. They have remained there ever since, in room one, now known as the Davidson Suite, which has a view of a car park and a slip road. David Davidson, who is 79, is a Royal Navy war veteran. His wife, Jean, aged 70, is wheelchair-bound, but their room is on the ground floor, so there are no lifts or stairs to worry about, and it is not far to the dining room or the shops. "There is just no reason why we'd want to go home," Mr Davidson said.
The couple pay £450 a month for the room...."0 -
£15/night! Not bad - at that price, maybe I'd stay in hotels more often....

Its a bit depressing isnt it. In fact, if they went to Malta they could live long term in a hotel for probably less and get some sunshine too.

They still keep a Council Home (presumably for their accumulated "stuff") so they are still clogging up the social housing waiting lists

Theyve managed to keep the council house for 22 years aswell as pay for the motel room? Madness. Surely they have deserted the council house if they dont stay there for that length of time.0

I'd live in a travellodge if I could get a room at that price, but they don't have to be where they are. They don't have to get to work each morning, so they can simply choose a cheap hotel without thinking about that.
My problem is that the article says "couples whose rent exceeds £727 a month might well be better off booking a room". The trouble for me is I am single so paying half that in rent. So it just doesn't add up financially. I wish it would, I'd have done it a year ago without hesitation.0 -
