Having read Martin’s previous articles on the 0870 rip offs, I did some searching and decided to have our own 0870 number for home. There are numerous sites out there offering free 0870 numbers, so we just picked the one we liked and registered it. All the provider wanted was a name and address, the land line number it was to be diverted to and a ‘business name’. We made up a business name and it was up and running within 15 minutes.
Now our bank, utility providers, insurance companies, in fact everyone other than our family and friends, has to use our 0870 number to call us. If I have to register anything on line that has a required field for a telephone number, in goes the 0870 number.
It was interesting that most of the companies we informed of our change of number were not happy about registering a 0870 number for us. Our bank actually complained that it would cost them money to call us! Oh dear what a shame! One utility claimed that they were not allowed to register 0870 numbers, another claimed only ‘businesses’ were allowed them. Totally wrong, but I could not be bothered to argue and said it was up to them if they did not want to use it. They did in the end.
We get 2p per minute. Not a lot, but it is a little victory against ‘big business’. It also makes me smile when I find they have sold on my details and someone is trying to sell me something. A double glazing firm paid me 40p the other day to listen to some sales pitch.

This is interesting:

Customers may not perceive charges to your nationwide number as expensive
You enhance customer service, winning competitive advantage and building loyaltyCalls to this number cost you nothing. On the contrary, they earn you revenue. After the total revenue earned reaches £100 you will receive payments from BTHappy chappy0 -
Nothing!
I just chose one from a list of free numbers. You could pay for a 'special number' if you wanted to.
There are a number of sites offering free 0870 numbers, but charge a set up fee of around £10. I just kept going back to some of them and picked up one of their 'offers'. There appears to be a lot of competition between them, so it did not take long to find a totally free number.
Once set up, if you want to change the landline divert number from the original there is usually a fee of £9.95.0 -
Their is nothing very clever about this.Doing it makes you just as bad as the other users you dont like. In any case 0870 is due to be abolished in near future i believe.0

Well, I think a like-for-like policy would be OK. ie: if they only offer an 0870 number then you only give them your 0870 number.Happy chappy0

It was never intended or claimed to be clever; it is just playing companies who can only be contacted via a 0870 number at their own game. Family & friends are not affected and everyone I have told prior to posting on this board has smiled. However, you are entitled to your opinion.0

I like this very much! :j Did you worry at all about the validity of the company you chose or are they all quite 'safe'? I will be doing likewise - did you google for the possible providers or what. Well done say I. Oh and by the way do I gather that your original land line number continues to operate alongside? Is that how family and friends dont have to use the 0870 number? All advice welcome and well done again. Rough justice I reckon.:T0

The 0870 number just diverts onto your normal number ( I did a google search).Happy chappy0
