What security do I need

About to have a Dell Inspiron delivered later this week. What security software do I really need and do I have to purchase it or can i download free? Thanks

  • It will have vista preloaded, that's all you need. If you have a router for internet that will be fine too, it has NAT built in and is a good firewall. The other thing you can't buy and that is common sense.

You need an Antivirus, Antspyware and Firewall programme all of which can be obtained as free downloads.
You will soon get posters recommending their favourites.

    AVG/Avira are free antivirus.
    Malwarebytes free Antispyware
    Zone Alarm free firewall.

Ccleaner is also useful for getting rid of accumulated rubbish.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

If you have a router with a built in firewall then running a oftwre firewall is not really necessary although a lot of people do. Personally I don't. The only thing I would install is some form of Anti-Virus but then I know people who don't bother.

Malwarebytes is good but I only run it if I suspect a problem, Vista comes with Defender Anti-Spyware anyway.

Other thn that as totalsolutions said, commons ense is the key. Keep you PC updated with Microsoft patches. Don't open mails from people you don't know and don't visist dodgy websites
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Thanks to those who replied earlier. How can I check to see if my router has firewall protection?

Just about every wireless router has a NAT firewall these days. But thats NOT a replacement for a software firewall

I'd reccomend comodo internet security, zonealarm doesn't work with 64-bit windows, and comodo has been rated the best free firewall and best 64-bit firewall.
