Cold cinders from the previous night + 2 firelighters + 5/6 sticks+ some fresh coal. I don't use paper because it tends to 'choke' the fire.
Light it, leave it for 15 minutes until it takes hold, and then put on more fresh coal.
Never fails.0 -
I always leave a layer of cinders (after poking all the ash through), then lay a couple of firelighters with some kindling on top,. I light the firelighters and wait for the kindling to start burning then add the coal, or logs. I find this way the fire gets going without any further assistance from me:D0

whoops same method, cross posted.;)0

I thought I had to clean all the ash out before I begin to lay it. So should I leave the ashses in place apart from emptying the ash pan?0

Roll newspaper up, not to tight, not to slack, couple of tries and u'll have it right.. chop some would to make some kindling about 6 - 8 inches thickness can vary, to thin it'l burn to quick, to thick and it won't burn.. vary it you will no when you chop it. Put small coales on, not big or they won't burn, obviously theres no heat there. Dont put to many on enough to get the fire burning without collapsing it into its self...
And you have the perfect fire, no fire lighters needed, keep them for your bbq's.......
I know i do it every day!!!If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a couple of payments.0 -
I did it for years as well without firelighters.
Fill the grate with scrunched papers and then build a lattice of kindling, with small colas loosely pushed in and around. Then light and put a fireguard on with a broadsheet(Old Times style) sheet covering it so it draws for a few mins.
Take paper off guard before it catches and voila!!!Noli nothis permittere te terere

We haven't used firelighters for yearsWe scrunch up a layer of newspaper, put some twigs on top of that, then a layer of small sticks or coal. Light the paper, the kindling then catches and lights the wood or coal
