Help Please! Dumplings without suet?

I've got a lovely stew bubbling away, having promised stew and dumplings for dinner, but just discovered I've no suet. Does anyone know if it would be OK to make them with another kind of fat? Would you rub it in like you do with pastry?

i have heard of marg used instead and would think you would rub it in, not sure of quantity, someone else might know, but could be the same amount as the suet

I often use marg instead of suet.
Use half fat to flour (same as suet) and then rub in to form breadcrumbs before adding a very little water.
Form into rough balls and cook as usual.

  • Cold Butter seems to be the answer. See Here
  • I was interested in the solution to this too as suet has the dreaded trans fats.

Sproggi I shall try your recipe as I had stopped bothering with dumplings.

I hardly ever use suet and I use cold butter instead and it makes a lovely light dumpling.

How about adding cobblers to your casserole?

    Cobbler Pastry

    6oz/175g self-raising flour
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    Pinch salt
    1-1½ oz/25-40g fat
    Milk to mix

    Method

Sieve flour, baking powder and salt. Rub in fat, bind with milk. Roll out to ½ inch/1cm thick and cut into rounds.
Top cooked casserole with cobblers and continue to bake until golden brown.

Posted this withour refreshing page so didn't see real1314's post! :)
  • Can you put your cobblers in the slow cooker?
  • That's what we are having for dinner tonight! I just do 4oz marg or butter and 8oz self raising flour bound with some cold water. Throw some herbs, dry or fresh in as well before you bind in the water - parsley is nice. That does four of us!
