Best way to slice bread

Options
Hi all,

I'd be grateful if you could tell me the best way to slice bread,Im not too great doing it by hand and i know if i dont buy something im going to end up with very wonkey cut bread!

Ive just bought my first breadmaker, a panasonic sd253 :j and now im thinking how on earth am i going to cut it up.

I dont like the idea of a electric knife , ive seen one on lakelands websight but it looks complicated to use.

Any advice please?

ps hope ive posted this on the right board as this is the first time ive done a thread, apoligises if not

a decent bread knife with a good solid non-wobbly blade is essential. as I found out to my cost when I left my old Prestige brand knife behind when I moved recently. I'd had it for more than 20 years & never really thought about it until I bought a replacement in Lidl which was absolutely useless! fortunately, I was able to 'negotiate' the return of my old knife in exchange for the 'nice brand new one' ... sneaky I know :D

but it's tricky thing to actually buy because you can't try them out beforehand ... do you know anyone who has a good knife? perhaps you could try a friend's? or maybe someone here on the boards can recommend a good one? (I doubt my one is still in production)

    HTH :)

Cut slowly with not much pressure on the knife. It is the sawing motion which cuts the bread.

    excellent point :)
  • Glad you got your knife back and no not sneaky at all lol. Id of done the same. You reminded me that ive actually bought a good manual bread knife somewhere but its packed away ready for my move!! I should dig it out and see how i go on with that

Maybe its a good idea to ask around to see whos got what. I ve been looking for something that holds the bread whilst i cut it but cant seem to find one anywhere ..well not until the Betterware catolgue guy comes back on his rounds locally.

thanks for that, I don't feel quite so evil now ;)

you'll find that the HM bread is more solid than commercial bread & particularly once it's cooled is actually easier to slice evenly. but it's difficult leaving it alone to cool!

I use my new cleaver (habitat - £5.95) and that cuts perfect slices!

Are you left-handed? apparently all bread knives are designed for right handers(typical). It's something to do with the serrations on the knife.I'm left handed and manage ok with an ordinary knife(as do my Mum,Dad and OH-also lefties),but some lefties don't-we've had a lot of practice ;)

In Worcester we have a left-handed shop that sells left-handed bread knives.

Most of the welsh mams in the old days used to tuck the bread under their arm and cut the top off after buttering . BM breads in the panasonic do tend to be quite tall so cutting slices off the top would be easier than down the long side. I second the fact that a good manual breadknife and a sawing motion with no pressure willl do the trick.

Don`t bother with an electric knife. It`s a waste of money, tricky to set up and I gave up on mine and threw it out.
