Hi all, I recieved a letter from a company called fredrickson international saying that Arrow Global had instructed them to collect a debt of £8836 for a personal loan from Alliance and Leicester.

I have never had a loan fron A & L so to clear the matter up i called them to try and say that they must have the wrong person or address Instead i got asked for a lot of pwrsonal details that i not willing to hand out over the phone since it is not my debt and i do not know or have never had any dealings with this company.

I was rudely hung up on 3 times even though i am just trying to clear up the matter. they said if you don't give us your details we can't discuss details. I said i don't want to discuss the details all i am doing is trying to tell you that you are sending letters to the wrong person/address, they said we will have to take matters further and hung up on me.

I am now worried that i am going stuck with someone else's £9000 loan to pay and i am not willing to give them my details over the phone to a company i don't know and have had no dealing with and the fact that they will not even talk to me without me giving any details makes me suspicious that thay are trying to steal my identity.

My wife threw the letter in the bin and said don't worry about it as it is not our loan.

I am not so sure about the not worrying thing though.

Anybody heard of these companies and do any of you have nay advice on what i should do, if anything?

Thanks in advance.

  • Welcome to the forum.

What a pickle indeed. Have you ever had any correspondance from A&L themselves?

I think you should ask the debt collectors for written proof of the loan.
  • Don't give them any details, they are most likely fishing. Check your credit file just incase someone has taken out a loan in your name. If you need to contact them again do it in writing.

  • Have you lived there long?

If yes check your credit report to see if people have used some of your details to obtain loans etc

Please don't take this the wrong way, I hope you don't think I'm being rude. But, there's no chance that it's your wife's loan, is there?

  • Hi all thanks for the replies.

I am a member of experians credit check and check my report regulary and nothing has ever shown up in the name of A & L.

I only moved into my new house in August and have moved about 3 times in the past 7 years and while i have had credit problems in the distant past 7 years + none of them were with A & L.

No offence taken but there is no chance of it being my wifes loan we have only ever taken loans out jointly and these were a long time ago the only credit i have these days is the dreaded Credit cards and i am making my payments regularly and on time and this is shown on my credit report.

My wife and i have a joint account and have never had separate accounts and i am the one that deals with all the finacial goings on and i always let her know what i am doing.

The name of the person they are looking for is Barry Brownlee i am Barrie Brownlee small difference but one that any bank would spot and correct after a credit report check if i was trying to apply for a loan i would have thought.

The only 2 things i can think of are someone has stolen my identity and used the more common spelling of Barry when they did it or there is a Barry out there and they are just trying to pin it on me.

In these modern days of identity fraud i always refuse to give my personal details out over the phone to anyone, company or otherwise that i do not know.

In this case all i was doing was trying to help these guys by telling them that i was not the person they were looking for and to have the phone hung up on me as soon as i refused to tell them any personal details like my date of birth seems very suspicious after all you would have thought that they would want to try and clear something like this up rather than just threaten me with further action and hang up??

I have to agree that i think these guys have bought this debt and are just fishing to see if i would pay up, like i would have forgotten about a £9000 loan or something NOT!

The next step is thiers and if i hear from them again i think i will go to the CAB and see what they say, but a stiff letter in reply telling them that i am not the person they are looking for and that i have never had any financial dealing with A & L and that any further contact from them will be returned to sender as the person they are looking for does not live hear might be an option.

The only thing that worries me is that i have heard of people having had thier identity stolen and being forced to pay back large loans and such that they are not liable for because they cannot prove it was not them that got the credit in the first place.

Oh well we will see in time, i will keep you all informed as to what happens.

As for my genuine credit at the moment, well what with the new house needing a complete overhaul (electrics, plumbing and then the redecorating after that) it is going to be slow as i will have to repay the C Cards bakc at just over the minimum payments but i won't be taking out any extra credit to do the house up.
  • We had something similar. Both my hubby, I and my brother all have the same 1st initial and surname.
When someone does a runner or similar they shall trace anyone with similar names and write to them in the hope that they find the right person. Both I, my hubby and brother all got the exatct same letter even though my brother didnt live with us. We phoned the credit agency and they explained what I had said above. I bet thats what happened as the two speeelings of Barrie and barry would still sound the same and the name Barry can only be said in one way

  • If I Were You I Would Write To Them Explain You Are Not That Person And You Have No Associaton With Debt And That You Tried To Explain Over The Telephone But Some Poorly Trained Yobo Just Kept Hanging Up , Say You Do Not And Will Not Give Any Information Over The Phone To A Cold Caller Or For Something You Know Nothng About, Also State You Will Regard Further Contact As Harassment If They You Require You To Prove Who You Are Photocopy The Front Of A Bill Dont Give Any Other DetaiLs
  • I am just going to wait just now and see if they try to follow up on it.

If they do i will reply with the standard "i don't recognise debt to you or your client please send details of the alleged debt letter".

also stating that i had tried to clear this up on the phone but ill manered and poorly trained staff would not talk to me and hung up.

I think the fact that i was hung up on 3 times is whats reallly getting to me not the threat of debt, I mean how bad is the training in such a company when they are trained to hang up when they don't immediately get what they want??
