I've mentioned this before but my Dad's laptop is always having trouble with updates yet mine just sails through them "touchwood"
On my old Vista Computer I got a chk disk message after installing updates then it went into safe mode. I did get it sorted but I just dread installing updates.0 -
A couple of friends thought W10 had been installed

I've got a spare Win 7 desktop which I thought I'd better update since it's not been used for months.
I booted it up on Thursday evening, it's set to 'Notify, but don't download', it got itself in a reboot/update failure loop.
There was nothing on it, so I thought a quick reinstall would be the easiest solution.
Now it won't update at all.
I've loaded the latest Update Agent, put on IE 11 as a standalone, which has helped trigger updates in the past.
I've turned it on/off, tried all the update options, in all it's probably been running for 8 hrs, and still no sign of any updates. :mad:Move along, nothing to see.0 -

I had similar problems on a couple of Windows 7 machines recently. One of these should fix the problem:
You could try running the System Update Readiness Tool:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/what-is-the-system-update-readiness-tool
Or reinstalling the latest version of Windows Update:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/949104
Or deleting the Windows Update cache by stopping the Windows Update service, deleting the contents of the %WINDIR%\SoftwareDistribution folder, then restarting the Windows Update service. (N.B. This deletes the entire Windows Update history on that machine. It's not recommended unless you're having problems that can't be fixed any other way. However, I personally haven't noticed any adverse effects from deleting this folder's contents.)0 -

I've already renamed the Software distribution folder to .old, rather than deleting.
The System Update Readiness Tool has been running for an hour while I was watching the rugby.
I'm not confident it will work, but glad to be proved wrong.
It never used to be such a problem.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

Left it running until 8 pm, nothing, now putting it away until next time.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
You'll no doubt be pleased by this then:

This comment on the Plusnet forums suggests that the nag-banner-ware is only activated in IE when certain other Win10 related KB's are installed.

That may well be the case. I'm not getting the banner (at least not so far!).Stompa0 -

Huh. Anything in the Event Log?
It's probably not related, but I found this hotfix helped some Windows 7 machines that were stuck checking for updates:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3102810
Here are my notes of the steps I took. I can't quite remember why I thought it was related to SP1, but this worked for me:- Install KB3102810 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49540
- Scan for Windows Updates to see if the problem is resolved. If not, continue:
- Uninstall SP1 (Service Pack 1) via the "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel applet.
- Stop the Windows Update Service (by running services.msc).
- Rename the %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution directory.
- Start the Windows Update Service.
- Install all appropriate updates from Windows Update EXCEPT SP1.
- Reboot the PC.
- Repeat steps 7 and 8 (if necessary) until all appropriate updates have been installed EXCEPT SP1.
- Install SP1.
- Re-install KB3102810.
