Bought a lemon. Lets see if I get a refund.
Options
Right, after my Octavia failed it's MOT I purchased a Zafira 2.0DTi on a '03 plate for £2.2k.
Today, after 1 week of driving, I took it to my mechanic for a full nose-to-tail examination to pick-up any faults whilst still under warranty. He found quite a few, so I have informed the trader & given him 2 options -
1) - repair the faults
2) - full refund.
He will cal me back in the morning with a full response.
Updates will follow.

You should have had the examination before buying. It depends what the faults are and how serious. I suspect a detailed examination could find faults on any 10 year old car.0
-
So which of these faults make the car a lemon?
When you buy an old used car expect issues to arise, as a result of wear and tear. Expecting anything other than this is unrealistic.0 -
I'm with the op.. It's a 10 year old car bought for a fraction of the price of a brand new car. It should be as good as a brand new car! Those of you who didn't know that are in cloud cuckoo land obviously
Seriously, it's a 10 year old car. They all have quirky faults and at 10 years old, thats one hell of a price to pay anyway. No car at that age is going to be perfect. Remember if its at a dealers, its there for a reason - probably traded in by someone else as it was becoming expensive to repair.0 -
Issues include -
Excess wear on discs/pads on every wheel
3 fault codes assocciated with the EGR (previous owner knew there was a problem and had the sensor replaced without luck)
Diesel fuel leak
Rear exhuast hanger no longer attached to back box.
Error code for engine preheater (Zafira's don't use glow plugs)
and quite a few other issues as well. Having paid slightly over book price (Glasses reckons £1900 for indie & £2000 for main dealer), I would have expected most of the faults to have been spotted and rectified.Never Knowingly Understood.

A 2003 2.0 dti Zafira doesnt have glowplugs? You can buy them on ebay.
Is the engine management light on? My Vectra produced an error for the EGR. If the lights not on, it may be stored codes (even caused by the previous owner fiddling with it).
Exhaust problem and brakes are consumables and the opinion of your mechanic.
Dont know how the dealer will deal with it though.0 -
How do you know the wear on brakes is excessive? Surely this is dependant on quality of pads, when they was last replaced and driving style.
Exhaust issue is a non issue.
Leaving EGR valve and leak.... Well you may need to elaborate, but again, the car is 10 years so has this the result of faulty parts or simply wear and tear????

Very but then as the news has demonstrated recently, people in this country are very good at shutting the door after the horse has bolted.
I think the op sounds like a blithering idiot. Not only have they admitted to paying more than the book price but they also didn't bother to do any basic checks before buying.
Who pays more than the book price? There is haggling and there is unsuccessful haggling but this is just agreeing to be ripped off.0 -

Vehicle still has to be fit for purpose i.e. safe and roadworthy.0 -
I know lot of these have had EGR blanking kits installed due to the EGR quite literally clogging-up due to it's poor design (for those who have not seen it, it goes from the front of the engine round to the back).
I have a strange feeling that I will be getting a refund somehow. Either cash tomorrow, or via the SCC if he wants to push his luck (once at that stage, I will be adding-on the diagnostic fee + the 6 months Tax I purchased for my van so I could have a vehiocle to get to work in, and of course, the Court fee itself).
Btw, Tricky, I am not a blithering idiot. I actually took the thing on a lengthy test drive that included speed bumps & could not detect any nasty bangs or rattles. But then again, I'm not a mechanic so the faint sqeek the trained ear of my mechanic picked-up, I didn't.
Anyway, my mate bought a 54 plate Picasso from ebay on Monday, he did do a good check-over and even he failed to notice an injector leak & gummed-up EGR valve, so it can happen to anyone.Never Knowingly Understood.
