I normally buy my Travelcards before I go from here.

Oyster card is cheaper and more convenient, unless you have a teenage children then there's the added hassle of getting a photocard oyster.

You can buy off peak travelcards from your local station, with a railcard you can also get the relevant discount, subject to r/cs T&Cs relating to minimum fares. Not worth doing without a railcard as they are 1-6 cards at £8.

Ask for a 1 day travelcard from, say Wimbledon, or any other train station in the London zonal area, you will get an off peak 1-6 travelcard for £5.30 adult and £2 child. You can get them in advance from any station and there is no need to go anywhere near Wimbledon, or whichever station you choose your ticket to start from.

Nice tip  works out a lot cheap if buying with a railcard.

You can also do that online, I tried on the East Coast Website 'Wimbledon to
London All Zones Travelcard' 1 adult 1 child & FF railcard, got the same fares.

You do not need to do this. A Zone 1-6 'in-boundary' Off-Peak Day Travelcard can be railcard-discounted wherever the origin is (inside Zone 1-6 of course) on the ticket and wherever it is bought. It is commonly issued from 'London Terminals' if bought from a railway ticket office outside the zones, however any 'in-boundary' station will do.

It is a common misconception that you cannot obtain such a discount when purchasing the ticket from London Underground ticket offices at tube stations, as opposed to National Rail ticket offices. This is however incorrect. The tickets issued on LU stock will just show that it is discounted rather than the exact type of railcard being used as shown on NR ticketing stock.

Thanks for the info. The common misconception is probably due to this statement on the F&F railcard FAQ page.

    11. Can I use my Railcard for tickets for travel on the London Underground?

When you buy discounted rail tickets using your Railcard for London mainline train stations, they are valid for use on the London Underground if you need to use the tube to get to the mainline train station. Off-Peak Travelcards (All Zones only) are also available, subject to a minimum fare.
However, we’re sorry that you can’t use your Railcard to get a discount when buying tickets from a London Underground booking office.

I understand that you are referring to one particular type of ticket but the above statement is pretty clear and I could see a tube station ticket clerk not fully understanding the difference.

In my case my 1st use of the travelcard is for a bus journey to a station, so I like to pick it up from my local station, who can cope with a request for a travelcard from Surbiton but might not be familiar with your option. Thanks again, Rich.
