Hi, does this mean the hmr calculator is wrong? It asks for your wage and how much tax you have paid and said my husband had paid £900 to much but he has a van and this was not included in the calculation. Where as on here with the tax code calculator my husbands tax code is worth £2229 in allowance and should be £6475 making a difference of £4246 his van does not cost that much I'm sure. Do I ring them?0

I have just had a letter saying that I have underpaid by £365. I work for Local Government and have done for the last 15 yrs. Given that I received my tax codes for this year which are the same as last year surely the responsibility lies with my employer to take the corect amount of tax. Do i have grounds for complaint?0

Impossible to say if you don't post the reason for the underpayment. Most have been caused by a 2nd income stream - such as a 2nd job / pension and which hasn't been correctly taxed. The P800 you have should give enough detail to work it out .... just post the figures. A separate thread would be better .... this is nothing to do with your query. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

No - you check his P2 coding Notice and the P11D from his employer first? If he has a Code restricted to £2229 allowances - the P2 will give the reason. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Hi,
Just thought i'd register and say thanks, because i've been overpaying tax and wouldn't have had a clue without this tool.
It's not huge amounts of money, but the tool got it spot on - it said a £455 discrepency, which was backed up by the tax office i just phoned up. It's only the tax on that amount, but it does go back for about 3 years i think. So a bit of a bonus, plus i'll be taking home a few quid more each month. Like i said, not huge amounts, i think it's about £90 per year, but that's an OK saving, esp when i get it backdated.
For info, I was paying Tax as though i had PMI (personal medical insurance), when i've not actually had any PMI. Dont know how that come to show on my tax code!
Thanks for the super-useful tool - i'd encourage anyone to have a quick check - it might be worth it!!
thanks

I checked my tax code to fond I had been on basic rate tax since 2005 resulting in a good refund for HMRC. My husband then decided he would check his - he has been paying BR tax on all income since 2000. Another nice refund, although we couldn't claim it all back as you can only claim for the past 6 years apparently. I have to say it has taken a long time and many phonecalls, but worth the effort.
Good luck!0 -
so i just saw the tax code calculater thing and decided to go find my p60's from the previous years.
now i found one for 2008-2009 with the tax code 609L
and then i found one for 2009-2010 with the code 653L.
i was working for the same company during this time do you get new tax codes every year??
plus when i input them into the calculater it says your tax code could be incorrect on both the code? it says that the code doesnt match my age or salery?
any ideas anyone?0 -

In each case £60 more than normal. You have an allowance of some sort - what does your coding notice say?i was working for the same company during this time do you get new tax codes every year??
Usually as the personal allowance changes each tax year.0
