Thanks D&DD- I had seen the onion marmalade thing but the reason I bought the onions was so that I could just save money with my day to day cooking.
I tend to use onions in everything and hate chopping them so peel and blitz a load at once then freeze in onion size portions ready to chuck in the pan.
It saves loads of time for me too.

I was just looking online and food dehydrators are available for $43- shame we can't use them over here isn't it? Or would it be possible with a voltage transformer and a travel plug?

  • Kaz I was interested to read your comments on freezing onions. My freezer book recommends blanching. Is it OK to miss out this fiddly process?:confused:

That's brilliant. I hate chopping onions and blitz in the food pro but never even thought of doing a batch because I was too lazy to blanch. I even bought some ready frozen not so long ago from Morrisons. Great tip.

The idea of dehydrating things like lemon peel and puree never even occured to me. That's a fantastic idea.

Off to make that carrot cake that I think JCR linked for me. (sorry if I got poster wrong). It looks gorgeous on the website. Delia knows her nuts, doesn't she? Bitty worried about the quark topping, tho. Name reminds me of an alien in Deep Space Nine.

Can anyone point me to somewhere on here that explains really simply how to post piccies? I'm assuming you can't just c & p them into the posts?

Thanks for that D&DD, nope can't say I have even thought of yoghurt drops, DS1 loves yoghurt coated things that you can buy so might be worth a try.

Hmm more lakeland items, thankfully we don't have one near me or I'd have spent a fortune by now :o saying that could always order online, god help my finances if one ever opened near me!

Been looking through the freezer and have set December's budget, more bread stuffs than anything else in the freezer to be honest which I will have to work through before making more. Had a nice suprise that a quidco payment of £220 which had only been 'tracked' for 3 months suddenly is scheduled for payment so that is helping with the Christmas shopping. I do still need to shop from home some more before Christmas.....
One day I might be more organised...........

    Hi
Just managed to get back on here, but thank you. I wanted to do this this year, but never got started. My 5 year old will love it as she loves veggies and fruit, especially raw! She's mad on cooked beetroot (vinegarless) so that would be great.
If our back garden was sorted out and we get our non existent grass/weeds dug out and paved I could possibly incorporate a section of the garden to a proper veggie garden, I'd love that, but I'm not a gardener of any kind up to now, hate it. However doing this kind of thing, may be better.

My friend has one of those frame greenhouse things and she grew tomatoes in it and various other bits.
I just need the motivation to start! lol

Luna69 - you can grow lots in pots - honest!!! My back garden started off as a horrible mess - a mix of previous owners and us trying to make changes... I got pots of all sizes and have grown allsorts - lettuce/salad; beetroot, beans, courgettes, carrots, potatoes, turnips, tomatoes, pumpkins, peppers - just a few of what I grow! This year we have put lots of hardwork into the garden and made 2 large raised beds - I bought sleepers but got soil and flagstones and greenhouse from freecycle! I still have lots of pots and most fruit bushes are in pots and next year I am planning to convert the front garden to low raised beds (I currently have 1 huge bed but need to make it more user friendly!). We also have claysoil and I find raised beds (only a sleeper high nothing huge) with loose topsoil on the top (having broken the clay up with a fork first) is so much easier to use! Get yourself a good container gardening book (I'll look mine up for you later on this eve), lots of pots, some bags of compost... ask for one of those plastic greenhouse shelving units or a couple of coldframes for christmas... and have a go! It's great fun, addictive, tasty and the kids love to help! Being up North is ok too... you can still grow loads of tasty stuff!

Luna I grow a beetroot called Cylindra which is very space saving but has a long root rather than a round one so you get twice as much from the same space ;) Have grown these successfully in pots too.Keep a look out for the coloured carrots too as little'uns love growing these :D They are great on the dinner table too for those 'fussy' eaters, encourages them to try something new :D
