mobileshop - "Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas Email £360"

My wife and I both received a phone call re this offer. Lady I spoke to said that they were doing this to see if the lure of a lump sum before Christmas was preferable to waiting a year to have your money back in full. Obviously only paying back approx. 60% cashback makes good business sense from Mobileshop’s point of view.
I appreciate speculation is just that, but IMO people should refrain from the ‘they're in financial difficulties’ posts unless they have evidence to back it up.
I am not linked to Mobileshop in any way. So far however I have no complaints about them and must say that their customer service has been very good on the few occasions that I have needed to contact them.
PS - We're not taking the early redemption offer.0 -

Totally agree. It was not my intention to start any speculation about the health of the company.
People in my family/friends circle have had several cashback contracts with mobileshop before without any problems at all.
PS We won't be taking the offer either...0 -

Well seeing has Mr Blair hasn't banned freedom of speech or having an opinion (not yet anyway), one is still able to speak as one finds providing the relevant libel/slander laws are observed.
MobileShop have increased the waiting period to write your cheque from 45 working days to 60 working days (thats twelve weeks to you and me).
They've also increased from 3 to 6 (I believe but stand to be corrected) the number of cashback claims you have to make.
They've also stalled on numerous cashback and referral payments recently, citing problems with their BACS software.........trust me, you can generate a BACS file with NotePad on your pc.
Ask a stockbroker if he'd recommend investing in Mobileshop shares and I suspect he'd say no.
FWIW, before anyone starts a flame war, I have a contract with them (taken out just before all these problems became evident) so I have no desire to see them go bellyup otherwise I stand to be £360 out of pocket over the year.
Oh, and my Quidco referral payment is still showing only as tracking (after four months).
Let's hope the optimists out there are right about their future. You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take - Wayne Gretzky
Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.0 -
chuckles1066,
I agree with everything you have said,
When the company start increasing it creditors days it normally suggest cash flow problems.
I hope I am wrong and all our cash back get paid but my payment is late again !!!!!!

Anon wrote:Mobileshop cashback offers change within days, so if you are looking, do go back. Each month they seem to have periods when there are no 12 month free offers, so this is not new or unusual. I get the impression that the offers come on depending on where they are in the monthly cycle and no doubt what their targets are with the networks. The best offers seem to be with o2 - they went away for a while but keep popping up again.
I hope I am wrong but suspect that Mobileshop have given away too much in the past and are now using a new business model to remain solvent.

Despite this I was intending to use them again next year IF I got all my payments but 60 days & 6 cashback claims is the the last straw. It looks like I will have to reluctantly brave cpw and all the problems they will bring.0 -

:T
I am coming to the end of my 1 year mobileshop cashback deal and I too got a similar offer last year offering full payment if I settle the deal early. Didn't take the offer (1/3 loss I don't think so) and have been paid all my cashbacks except the last one which have recieved email saying has has just been pocessed (so expect payment in next 3 days).
I would definitely go with them again. Never had to phone them even once to chase a payment. Always get email + text on updates.
Always sent bills recorded delivery.I think my monitor's running out of ink....0 -
Mobileshop still remains the ONLY online dealer that I recommend 100%. As mike_wall15 and virgo17 have already suggested, Mobileshop are simply making slight adjustments to their business model.
As you are probably aware cashback deals rely on the dealer predicting the average cashback that is successfully claimed. As network commissions remain fairly constant, if too much is being claimed then the dealer needs to:
- reduce cashback paid out on existing claims
- reduce cashback on advertised offers
Most of the measures Mobileshop are taking to reduce the cashback paid out on existing claims have already been mentioned. These include:
- exchanging and voiding all cashback claims for a one off cash payment (eg. £220 instead of £360 on a 12 month free line rental deal)
- exchanging and voiding one cashback claim in return for hardware (eg. DVD player or mobile handset instead of £90)
Reducing cashback on advertised offers is simply a case of changing the deal offered to the customer. eg. 6 months half price line rental instead of 12 months free. They have also recently introduced free hardware instead of cashback. For example, a free Sony PSP if you purchase a Motorola KRZR on selected T-mobile price plans or Samsung E900 on selected Orange price plans.
The important thing is to compare their strategy to that of other dealers. Would you prefer it they created cashback terms and conditions designed to confuse the consumer or if they simply refused to pay out cashback forcing the consumer the issue a small claim against the company?
How many instances have you read of a customer failing to receive cashback from Mobileshop?
How many instances have you read of a customer having to issue a small claim against Mobileshop?
Personally I don't think they are in financial difficulties. They are just making sensible business decisions that aren't simply methods of conning customers out of their cashback.

Hi, I have just received my notifcation email of receipt of my 3rd cashback claim. I have to say I have had no problems with mobileshop at all - the other claims have been completely trouble free. Phones2udirect, however, are another story. I have 2 phones with them and did not receive any instructions on claiming, so had to email them to ask. I have sent the first claims in, but have just received a letter telling me a) it is too early and b) I need to send the original bill, not copy. Im not happy about that. Also, they number their bills and on this one phone I received number 4, then number 6, which is the one they requested, but they are saying it is too early? Ah well, at least it's not too late...
Cheers

and... someone asked earlier on if there were any other recommendations? I'm looking too if anyone knows of a decent alternative. I would prefer not to go with o2 as I understand I can't port the number if I move from one special deal to another with the same network. Anyone know if this is the case?
Cheers
