okay try this start->run
CONTROL INETCPL.CPL
to resolved the problem with rundll32.exe
okay get your trusted XP CD and do the following
1. Put the Windows XP CD ROM disk in the CD ROM drive.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. Type expand X:\i386\rundll32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe in the Open box, where X is the letter of your CD ROM Drive.
4. Restart the computer.
Unfortunately I don't have have any of the CDs at the mo, dammit.
I done the first part, but after typing control... and hotting return I get a box asking me to save or run control.exe. If I hit run the blank IE page pops up for a bit then just disappears again0 -
debitcardmayhem wrote: »Sorry Pythagorous , I was not trying to be unhelpful but as MadTechie has now suggested "1 get an anti virus program" It appears from your other threads you have Norton as anti-virus, which I also use and happy with, but others might suggest it is better to use a free AV their opinion is valid too.
I was trying to help a little by saving you and others reading/suggesting what has been said before. Now I will leave you alone too, and good luck with your problems, there are people with more experience of virii/malware than I will ever have.
No problem and I see your point - I was just looking at it from a different angle and given the pc problems I've had tonight I had my  head on0 -

This should be done in the run box click start then select run then type
CONTROL INETCPL.CPL
click ok
just a quick test
try clicking start then select run then type
notepad
and then click ok
if that fails then your exefile are being hijacked,Press any other key to continue.0 -

Yeap done that and what basically happens is that after hitting okay it asks me to open with, from which I chose IE. Clicking ok after highlighting IE then brings up the blank IE page for a few secs which then disappears and a file download box appears for control.exe. If I run this the same thing happens over again and I end up back with the file download boxjust a quick test
try clicking start then select run then type
notepad
and then click ok
if that fails then your exefile are being hijacked,
Done that and notepad opened, but with a gobbledygook content.0 -

Nah, thought my problems had been solved...until about 3 hours ago!0 -
save this (everything after the dashes) to a text file called 1.reg, then double click on it.
I removed it, because mse messes up the formatting and quotes. Wait, and I'll find a downloadable version Edit: Use the one in the second box below, thanks debitcardmayhemDon't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0 -
save this (everything after the dashes) to a text file called 1.reg, then double click on it.

okay exefiles are not linked under the .exe association they are link to executable paths
so the reg file should also have this!Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command] @="\"%1\" %*"
as that's where the hijack would take place,Press any other key to continue.0 -
Thanks I seem to be getting somewhere now at least as that seems to have fixed something. Not sure where to go from here now though.
I tried this
2. Goto control panels and click internet options and click advanced tab and click reset.
3. load up IE in safe mode (All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Internet Explorer Safe mode)
and this time I was able to at least do 2, but @ 3there is no option for IE safe mode, only IE without add ons.0
