I've just added this to the start of the thread, but thought I'd pop it here for those who are keeping up with us daily :)

Tasks list if anyone would like to volunteer!

Each of the parts/tasks below will take a bit of writing/think collating, I guestimate this is quite an investment of your time. So do think if it's realistic, or if you just have a few ideas to share about a topic, maybe PM the main person who has put themselves forward, all tips will be gratefully recieved :)

why on earth did we come up with this mad scheme?

Shirley's big batch cooking day planner

Shirley's kit list and current best buys

glossary of food terms for a new cook

Tips for getting all the family on board, even the really stubborn ones

what to do when you arrive at the shop and there's no carrots?

We had some leftovers last night, I don't want to waste them!

I think I've just seen a better bargain what shall I do?

shirley's storecupboard of herbs, spices seasonings to make things just a bit more varied and interesting, but for teeny cash (or maybe for shirley's birthday pressie :))

my current understanding of how the phases of this mad scheme might roll out:

Weezl's phase 1- recipe testing and frugalisation- come one, come all!

phase 2 - nutritional checks, stock checks, costings and finalisation of shopping list and planners

phase 3 - actual testing of the whole month by a couple of real families- gulp:eek:

phase 4 -tweaks and write up

Phase 5 make it known somehow to Bob and Shirley

Reet...just gone back into this overall Plan of Action.

As regards "Shirleys kit list" - I presume you mean essential equipment? - in which case I do think it is a good idea to give substitutes (eg the one, for instance, about grating bread to make breadcrumbs instead of using a liquidizer is one that I just used myself again tonight) and we had come up with several substitute bits of "kit" so far and it aint necessarily so that everyone will think up every possible substitute for themselves. I know myself that there IS only so much headspace available for each individual thing - so I tend personally to focus on:
    - longterm plans/vision
    - mini "housekeeping" tasks

Other people have got different things they will "focus" on - and if summat like "kit" isnt the type of thing they tend to focus on - then little things like that will not occur to them.

Think the overall Plan of Action of Phases 1-5 sounds pretty spot-on to me.

The only thought I would add is that at Phase 5 - I am inclined to head for local/regional level of whatever (be it Press or government) to start "putting the message through". NOT national level - they will pick it up themselves - once its gone through a "lower" level and been adopted by people "nearer to hand".

    Onion Bhajis

    3 tbspns warm water
    320g onions, sliced
    Chilli, garlic

    120g/4oz plain flour

    2 tsp Garam masala

3 tbsp vegetable oil, plus extra if required

    Method

Add the onion rings, together in a bowl with water, flour, garam, garlic and chilli and stir well to combine and mix well.

Heat the oil in a deep-sided frying pan over a medium heat. When hot add a large spoonful of the bhaji mixture and fry for 30-45 seconds, until golden-brown.

Turn the bhaji over and fry for a further 30 seconds, until crisp and golden-brown all over. Remove and drain on kitchen paper.
Repeat with the remaining bhaji mixture, replenishing the oil in the pan if it runs low and allowing it to heat up again after a new addition.

Avocet does your super spreadsheet cost up recipes easily from Asda, if so could you see what it makes of the above? :AIf not, no problems I'll do it in the wee small mathematical hours of the morning :)

Tut...tut...our Weezl. Anyone with any sense WOULD "buy you" as you put it.

I'd hire you for any job/career I had going if I was in that sorta position. Reason - I know you have a good self-evaluation of yourself - so if you said you could do something then I'd know you really could (and werent flannelling me). I'd know you would be hardworking, with initiative/consideration/a way of getting everyone "on board".

Errrm....whats not to like?:D You're certainly a darn sight more conciliatory than I will ever be. If someone annoys me by being obtuse/selfish or whatever - then I yell at them - but you are MUCH more conciliatory than I am.:o
  • Hi all,

Right I finally got around to trying out the carrot cake. I halved the recipe and made a few tweaks to what we had in the house at the time. I used:

    150g wholemeal self raising flour
    75g sugar
    2 Carrots
    100ml vegetable oil
    2 eggs
    1 1/2 tsp garam masala
    A little orange juice
    1/4 teaspoon bicarb

I made it in a loaf tin and it took about 50mins to cook at 180. I didn't use any raisins because we have a lot of those anyway in our breakfasts and homemade flapjacks.

Thank you for the recipe Weezl because it was really lovely and light :T Although I think we must be super greedy because I think the loaf will only serve about 8 portions!

Money paid out from Topcashback so far= £105.89 :j
No buying magazines in 2011 Challenge- Number bought to date= 0 :)

    thanks pink hayley :)

do people think you get less portions out of the reduced oil and sugar version? I'm just saying this because although I agree with the reduction of those ingredients if they aren't necessary, it would be a shame if the kids needed to eat twice as much to yield the same teenager runaround energy, which might hurt shirley's purse quite a lot :)

The original yielded 32 squares of cake measuring 2 ins by 2 ins with a height of 1 inch if that helps anyone to compare :)
