My local metro store implemented a "must purchase product" policy a while ago and just recently moved to one coupon per shop if not buying. However a new store manager started this week and I had a good chat with her when I asked her for some help finding an item: I stated that I attempted to use a coupon and was told needed to buy product and thought this may have been against TESCO policy. The new manager agreed and promised to communicate the proper national policy to all staff.

I have been in twice since and used 8 coupons both times and even the previously Hitler type employees happily accepted all coupons and even typed in problem MOCS.:T :j

    Well the plot thickens:

Went to my local Tesco Tuesday evening and had to use the self scan as the main tills were heaving. I used three coupons and the machine asked for authorisation. A Team Leader (about 12 and caked in make up) approached and stated she would have to check the coupons. After over 5 minutes of searching for the keys and attempting to open machine she finally inspected the coupons. She confirmed they were in date but after rummaging through my shopping said I could not use as had not purchased the items on the MOC. I explained that I had a letter from Dundee and the new manager had stated that you did not have to buy the product. She stated that “ I do not care what the store manager says or head office I can only go by what my line manager says- and she says must buy product “. Her attitude was terrible and she said she did not care anyway as her shift was finishing shortly.

I suggested she should care as Corporate Policy and Store Managers are higher up the chain of command than her Checkout Manager!! (blank look and continued refusal). The Duty Manager was then called (who I know is about 5th in command) and he too stated that you had to buy the product and even said “ As if you could use money off coupons without buying the proudct ho ho ho “. By this point I was surrounded by the Team Leader, The Duty Manager, A girl from customer service desk, a cashier and just for good measure the fat security guard!!

I asked for the full name of the new manager and between the five of them nobody knew and stated as she was new Manager why would they know her name!!!!??? I decided I had heard more than enough and left feeling very angry.

Well yesterday I phoned the store to try and speak to the Store Manager but was told by the lovely staff member who answered that she did not know if the manager was in and also did not know her name.

I decided to call Dundee and the girl there was very helpful and said her sister uses hundreds of MOCS after hearing about the policy. Well to cut a long (very long) story short Dundee CS phoned the Store and spoke to the Checkout Manager. She admitted that the Store Manager had told her the correct policy on Monday but as not in Tuesday could not communicate to her team members. The Checkout Manager apologised for treatment and promised I would never be stopped from using valid MOCS again as she was going to tell all staff the proper policy.:T

Went in yesterday and received personal apology from Check out Manager and told I would also get one from the Team Leader once she had been dealt with in the office as this was not the first complaint against her.

Went through till and handed over a pile and the cashier said I was lucky as a “new policy” had just been explained to all staff and therefore she could accept them all!!
    :T

Unfortunetely profile is through the roof but something had to be done and it all seems good for now.

This epic story has reached its finale!!

In my experience if you go to one of the self-service checkouts you scan just about any voucher and it will work ;)

Thanks but be careful about using this in T's atm.... I have seen it reported that they do scan it T's BUT my store handed it back as not stocked by T's (For which I apologised) - I have looked on MySupermarket and Tesco.com and it wasn't shown there so unless you actually see it in your branch I would be a bit wary of using it...
There was some debate about whether this mattered as long as 'T' stocked it somewhere it was OK to use a moc but I take the other view as I do not know the full story about them claiming their money back so don't want to upset them.....
:p:p Have a good [STRIKE]Tesc[/STRIKE][STRIKE]Asd[/STRIKE]WHO? day - Err....I still wish Mozzies had a better website even though they are now on MyS! :p:p :rotfl:;)

I never use self scan, the till always asks for authorisation and it's a pain in the neck. You could ask at CS what the store policy is or just start with a little shop and offer a couple of coupons and see how it goes. On the first page of the printable coupons thread is a copy of Tesco policy, you could print that to take with you.

Technically if you knowingly scan a moc for a product that you haven't bought then you are committing fraud. Not only that with your attitude you will also upset the store and probably get moc usage either stopped or severely limited!!

In my experience this is bad advice. Never use an unacceptable coupon 'just because it scans'. Not only will it be more likely that your local Tesco will stop or tighten up their coupon acceptance, but it's extremely likely to get you in very hot water one day if discovered.

People have been banned for using out of date or other stores' coupons in Tesco. I don't think the OP wants this!

staceydaisy, the better advice is from Harrietxxx, print out the coupon policy from the printable coupons thread (it's a sticky at the top of this board). All Tesco are supposed to follow the coupon policy although many don't know it or operate a variation of it.

Your best bet IMHO is to try a larger Tesco at first, preferably an Extra - and choose a young friendly-looking cashier. Forget looking for the emptiest till - us couponers look for the friendliest face even if he/she has a queue. And NEVER choose a middle aged woman unless you know from experience she is OK with the coupon policy.

Stay away from smaller stores, Metros and Express stores, until you are more confident. And stay away from the self-scan, full stop! A cashier in an Express or Metro is much much more likely to refuse and look at you as if you have 2 heads if you try to use a Hovis coupon to buy a newspaper. And using the self-scan requires coupon authorisation - which will make you even more nervous! In my local they only allow one coupon at the self-scan because of abuse - but the cashiers will allow one of each, no limit.

We've all felt very very stupid and scared the first few times we used coupons...I know how you feel! But that blushing embarrassment will disappear once you find which cashiers are OK and you know your store's variation on the policy. Be aware some stores don't allow internet prints at all - so don't waste your ink yet printing lots and lots!

Why not go in, get your shopping and a copy of New magazine (85p). At the till, tear out the OK coupon worth £1.50 from your New magazine (see the magazine thread) and hand that over with your clubcard. That can be your first test and it's not too embarrassing.

    Well done! :T
There is nothing wrong with a high profile at all if you always use legitimate coupons. I went thru a similar experience with 2 of my local stores 2 years ago to finally drag them kicking and screaming to accept the coupon policy.

One Store Manager knew my name as I had to meet him and write to him to resolve the whole problem. And 2 of the worst rudest Supervisors still scowl whenever they see me in one store.

I don't care if they like me or not, both stores allow coupons ever since and I am PROUD I stuck my neck out. You have done everyone a service by paving the way for other couponers not to suffer such rudeness in that store from now on, which is great. I now feel I can send my teenage daughter in with a few mocs once in a while, knowing she won't get any hassle at all. I wouldn't have DARED subject her to the horrendous treatment they used to dole out to me regularly. Sounds very similar to your store.
    Good on you!:T
