    Hi stairsinmycrown.
Could you ask them for a small overdraft £50 maybe to stop this happening again.
I don t know if you can get it back but its worth a try.Just turn on the charm and hopefully customer services will be nice back.
Life is short, smile while you still have teeth :D
  • OP has no choice other than to sign contract. sure he could check other banks but they all charge pretty much the same. If he wants his JSA then he needs bank account. He may have also been in different financial circumstances then.

OFT thinks levels of bank charges and terms and conditions are unfair,
    judges agree.

Why do people like Simon Templar think they know better.

banks have a reason for denying the glaringly obvious.

Have yet to see a response that validates the argument that the level of bank charges are fair.
Could any of the people with judgemental responses please present an argument that we, the OFT and judges presiding over test case can accept as a viable reason for high level of bank charges.
  • you could try phoning bank and ask them to look at it as other posters have already stated. I have in the past resolved similar problems with other companies with a phone call.
Saying that i have never got a positive response from a bank just keep your fingers crossed that it is not an indian call centre you get, from my experience they will not have the authority to do anything about it anyway and your phone bill will be as high as charge by the time you find somebody who does have the authority.

Try sending them a letter and charge them £10 for that then follow up with a phone call and charge them £20;)
  • Actually, I'm pretty solvent! I'm a saver by nature, and I consider myself very lucky to have a secure job, and low enough outgoings to save for my future.

Mr Templar choose to assume otherwise, rather than offer advice when I asked a question. Much the same as his behaviour on your thread, starsinmycrown.

  • Hello Starsinmycrown,

Sorry about this - I'm sure there's some kind of regulation that says banks shouldn't take money out of benefits, maybe you could look into this (I don't know a great deal about it myself sorry, but I understand this is the case)

Other than that, contact them again and explain the situation, maybe you'll get through to someone with a bit of humanity (I'm still so optimistic, bless...)

Hope you get some joy on it, they really don't help you when you're down on your luck, do they?

And for your response to a certain cantankerous bank-supporter on here, well said. You came on to ask for advice, not to have someone make pointless, unhelpful comments clearly made with the sole intention of winding you up. Obviously this individual has an exemplary financial history and has never incurred charges or such terrible things. As has been said above, it's somewhat strange that such an individual would choose to spend so much of their time on a board dedicated to reclaiming bank charges. Hmmm.... curiouser and curiouser

Oh and just in case such a person should feel the need to comment on my financial situation; I am in debt. That's why I joined this forum. Because I would very much like not to be. I do wish I had the luxury of never having made a mistake, but hey, it's all part of being human. :p

i had a problem like this last week with lloyds, just call them up they have a policy that if you havent been refunded in the last 12 months for charges they refund you, but warn you that next time they will stand

I understand the concepts of cooking and cleaning
........ I Just dont understand how they apply to me!

Would a post office account be a feasible option for you.
You could get benefits paid into that then draw cash out and place funds into your bank account to cover direct debits.
If you explain this action to your bank they may come to an arrangement with you over charges if they see an effort on your part to take control.
That is if you get them on a good day.
  • Hello starsinmycrown, I was in a similar situation to you with lloyds at the end of December. I went 60p overdrawn over the weekend after Christmas, by the time I checked my online banking (well, it was xmas and I had better things to do!) my charges would have been £39.

I paid in enough funds (61p!!) to bring me into credit and wrote a polite but firm letter pointing out I had been a customer for nearly 20 years and had run my account well, and would they please refund these charges as a gesture of good will?

Well, the charges were never added to my account and I got an standard letter pointing out that the charges were part of my agreement with them....I would like to see the original contract i signed way back in 1980!!

So, write to them and make your request polite but firm, the way all banks are acting at the moment it makes me so mad they are trying to drag even more money out of us for such a small oversight.

  • Does anyone have any advice, sent in my letter to the bank with details of what they had over charged me, got a phone call this morning telling me that I would be getting a letter from them to list my expenditure on??? and that I have a meeting with them next week anyone any ideas on what this is about?

There isn't - this is a popular urban myth that has been doing the rounds - don't pursue this avenue, it won't get you anywhere.(sorry:o )
