I'm a bit of a crisp lover so looking at vegan options was one of the first things I did!!! I can highly reccomend Jonathan crisps
http://www.jonathancrisp.co.uk/
They do about 10 flavours and *i think* only two arent suitable for vegans.I'm an MSE SLACKER!!!! Slap my bum.

Thanks bluemoon, I'll give that a try next time curry's on the menu :j
Kim ley: really good point; Animal Free Shopper is a big help, but for a broader picture the internet is useful (further back in the thread is a link to Procter and Gamble and Unilever boycotting).
I have learnt that there's the issue of what is cruelty free and then what is animal free (i.e some companies may not test on animals, but their products could contact animal by-product).
I have not yet chucked out all my 'products' as to be honest I will never be able to shake off the idea of waste not, want not. But I use them every day so they will soon run out and then I can concentrate on supporting vegan companies which produce vegan toiletries/make-up/household goods. One step at a time......although others may have been more thorough and immediately got rid of anything animal-related.
Perhaps look at what you currently use i.e your regular cleaning products, regular toiletries, etc. and Google the company which makes them (time consuming I know, but could be worth it) to find out whether or not they test on and/or include animals.
I'm going to try a couple of Lush shampoo/condition/body lotion products listed as vegan (sadly not very OS, unless we can all figure out their secret?!?). I understand Avon is cruelty free, but I don't know about animal free (will do some research on that) and their products I would argue are pretty good value for money.
There's always good old homemade toiletries (beer for hair, yay!) or cleaning ideas (The book How Clean is Your House? is a good starting point and there must be a thread on here somewhere.....) - basically use bicarb of soda to clean everything!
Remember, no-one is looking over your shoulder to see if you 'fail' or the degree of your veganism for the time being; becoming vegan is the step in the right direction, and whatever follows is only positiveI think bluemoon makes a good point that these things can take time, and you can't suddenly become an expert on veganism over night and expect to know each and every product you can or shouldn't use.

Honey is not vegan is it? Because I've been searching for tasty snacks to have in the cupboard or take out for *emergencys* and found southern alps now they stateIt's suitable for vegetarians, vegans, and those on a Kosher diet
INGREDIENTS: Cashews, almonds, brown rice syrup, slow mango, crisp rice (riceflour, fructose, salt, monoglyceride, soy lecithin), slow green apple, raisins, coconut, pumpkin seeds, honey.I'm an MSE SLACKER!!!! Slap my bum.

Actually, I think they are nowadays. They used to have cheese powder in them, but I looked at a bag at my MIL's house this Xmas and the ingredients looked vegan to me - no more cheese powder!
Worth a look.

if there is anyone considering going veggie/vegan here is what made me decide to stop having dairy it http://www.meat.org/ although it's American it doesn't matter... the things that happen in this video also happen in this country supposedly in a "more humane" way. but ask yourself how can it be ok simply because it's more humane? what gives us the right to say it is ok for us to do this to animals. i'm sure if they had the ability not one of them would aspire to be a dairy cow or a roast leg of lamb!!! I am envious of all those who have been veggie/vegan all their lives as I feel such an idiot having eaten meat all my life and not really giving it a seconds thought.I'm an MSE SLACKER!!!! Slap my bum.

Dobie, are you sure it's the Bisto powder that's vegan - I thought it was the granules? *I've just checked and on Viva it says that both the powder and granules are vegan but the 'complete gravy mix' isn't.quote]
You're right bluemoon. I've checked the Bisto 'Favourite' granules & they're vegan. The ones called 'meat' & 'chicken' aren't though. Which is fair enough as the clue is in the name!! Not that the chicken one contains chicken - it contains egg & milk.0 -
Try this for a splendid bread accompanyment to your curry::DWholemeal Chapattis(Makes about 6)
Ingredients:
225g Plain wholemeal flour
½Tsp Salt
Filtered water (Room temp)
Method:
1)Mix flour and salt, then add just enough water to form a stiff dough
2)Knead thoroughly, then cover and chill for 1 hour plus
3)Knead again and divide into 6 balls
4)Roll each ball out very thinly on a floured surface
5)Heat a heavy-based frying pan until hot and cook each chapatti for a minute or two until browned on both sides
The dough freezes well, although in practice it doesn't usually last long enough to go in the freezer.0 -
Hi Kim_ley,
my signature is very silly but i love it. It's a quote from Terry Pratchett's discworld novels about the magical library. Its explaining how libraries can bend space and time (a fact commonly known by those who wander second hand bookshops and find themselves emerging three weeks later...:rotfl:). But its also just to emphasise the power of books and reading. As I'm a librarian and a book lover it makes me smile:rolleyes:
Hope that explains it. Will be back later with some recipes or geekery but right now I have to do some serious tidying as the house looks like a bomb hit it:eek:0
