Does already having a Clubcard mean that you are an "existing" customer (and hence not eligible for the clubcard points)?

No, otherwise there would be little point ;)

A Tesco Clubcard is just a loyalty card, makes you a customer of Tesco, but not Tesco Personal Finance. Unless you have some savings or finance products with Tesco you are in effect a "new customer".

I believe the cubcard data is only used for credit card applications.
But some people might not want their data to effect their future credit applications in ways that are hard to predict, and where does it say it stops there? According to the savings T&C you have to agree to, they can pass your data around the Tesco and RBS groups for a range of vaguely defined things:

Isn't anyone worried about the association between Tesco and the Royal Bank of Scotland - only a few weeks ago their shares were down 40% and the word on street was they possessed alot of toxic U.S Bonds?
  • I've applied for the Internet account. One word of warning when you get to the page where it asks you which account you are interested in the options are:

    1. Instant Saver (default)
    2. Not sure

This looks a little suspicious as this is within the Internet saver application area and it's not offered as a choice. The default is the low interest Instant Saver, so you have to choose "not sure" to then (later) be offed the Internet account. Sharp practice?

No you don't. If you leave the "INSTANT" (note, not "instant saver") box checked, the next screen remembers you are applying for the Internet Saver account and displays correctly. Try it out with some dummy details and you'll see what I mean. ;)
    Sharp practice?
    No, just sloppy programming/misunderstanding?
  • OK take your point but why the choices (includling the ridiculous "not sure") when, at the begining, you are applying for one specific account? Not very clever is it? Cheers for reducing my paranoia!

I still have an 'instant access savings' account from a similar offer a couple of years ago. If I open an Internet Saver (i.e. a different type of account) should this offer still go through?

(yes, I know I'm quoting myself...it was simpler)

I rang TPF today and was told that as I would be a new customer to the Internet Saver, I would be eligible for the points promotion. She was also able to close my Instant Access Savings account over the phone (I've been meaning to do it for ages).

I asked her whether, 'theoretically' ;), in the future I would be eligible for promotions on the Instant Access Savings, but she said it would be dependant on the terms of that individual offer, as they do change between deals. I felt it would be a little cheeky asking her whether it would be valid within the scope of this offer, seeing as she had only closed my old account moments earlier.

So, the 'new customer' bit on the T&Cs refers to each particular account, not TPF as a whole.

Things for someone else to clear up...
    1) Whether you're eligible if you've held an account of a certain type in the past but since closed it
    2) Whether the 'one account per person', is one of each or one in total (my bet os on the first one, personally)

There's a geographic alternative to the 08457 104010 number on saynoto0870, which I used and had no problems with. Didn't try the freephone number though.

You've been given incorrect information. I was told the same and then saw the later edit to their website (made 3/10/08) in which they added the words "new customers".

I checked again and the earlier incorrect information came to light.

However, because I'd taken names and ext no's (several of them) they agreed to honour the information I was originally given once I'd made an official complaint (and they did this in writing, stating they would have to diarise to check my account balance manually on 30/11/08 because the points wouldn't be awarded automatically). They stressed, however, that this was done as a goodwill gesture due to the current wording on their site.

I think that's the only way you'll qualify...as a new (ie, not current) customer.

As I said above, it used to do...but this changed on 3/10/08.

February's a long way off, so you ought to make sure you're OK before committing?
  • Just tried to apply online, and it says that you cannot apply between the hours of 24:00 and 06:30. First time I've heard of a website with opening hours... Bit ironic really, since Tesco shops are open 24 hours!
