Migrating Email Problem!

Options
Does anyone have any experience of changing broadband from BT!

I'm with them at the moment but am moving over to Tiscali at the end of the month, however I really need/want to keep my BT email address!

Does anyone know if they will let me?

When I phoned them for a migration code I asked the bloke if I could keep my BT address and he said "yeah I think so"! Thanks, very convincing!

I know that wanadoo don't let you keep theirs. You may find BT are the same. I would double check. You could get yourself a googlemail address.

Would you not be able to access it the same as you can access Yahoo now? Its just another part of BT Broadband isn't it?

Ok people if you have a change of email address and wish to notify everyone do this.

With your new email address set up click on create mail in OE

Then when the new message box opens click on To now click
on a name one at a time or highlight them all and then click on Bcc:->

Now all the names will be in Bcc:-> (Blind Carbon Copy) Now click
on OK and then compose a general email someting like..

Hi I have changed my email adress to (insert new email adress) please
update your address book ASAP as my old address no longer works.

Also go to any online accounts and do the same log in and change your email
address to the new one for Banking ebay or what ever.

When you do a Bcc email this means no-one else can see who else got an email
from you and by adding all the names in one go only one message is sent but
    it reaches everybody.

I think there is a way to do this by asking to keep your email for an old fashioned pay-as-you-go dial up account and making a short connection to the dial up service every few months.

I would like to do this myself, so keep me posted on how it goes. :)

    This recent post should help.

  • A quick update.

Just got off the phone from BT and the woman has told me that even if I have absolutely no connections I can keep my email address with them.

She said that she has been advised in the past that even though you have no account with them, the email address does not get de-activated!

I asked for a call reference number in case it all goes tits up but they don't do them so she is putting a note on my account about what we talked about!

So, should they cancel it, I will have proof of what she said to me and I'll will go absolutely mental! :rotfl:
  • In general, I'd advise using an email address that is not connected to your ISP.

There are plenty of free email providers out there - GMail, Yahoo!, MSN/Hotmail - and you don't have to worry about migration when you change ISP.

But here's a really smart alternative..

You could pay about £10 to register your own domain name such as JamesIsTryingToHelpYou.co.uk and then set that up to route all email to whatever other/normal email account you have.

The primary benefit of this is that you will have unlimited emaill addresses, so you can do really smart things like using specific email addresses for stuff you sign up to.

For example, I sign up to these services with the following email addresses:

    eBay - ebay@JamesIsTryingToHelpYou.co.uk
    Usenet - usenet@JamesIsTryingToHelpYou.co.uk
    HSBC - hsbc@JamesIsTryingToHelpYou.co.uk

    .. you get the idea.

The reason this is helpful is that when I started getting (spam) email from people or services that I blatantly did not give my email address to, it's easy to find out who did give them my email address.

So, when I got a whole lot of spam from somesocialwebsite@JamesIsTryingToHelpYou.co.uk, I knew that 'somesocialwebsite' was unscrupulous and had given out my email address. I added a 'filter' to my email program to delete all email sent to that specific address and it instantly eliminated all the spam that they caused me.

Eliminating spam is a great way to avoid viruses and internet scams.

I hope this helps - I can give more details if anyone needs.

    Cheers,
    James
