XL in crisis talks

  • Tickets are not normally issued until about 2-3 weeks before you travel - so you wouldn't normally get them yet. Sounds like GLD have put together the package for you - so the accom voucher is issued immediately and the flights later. Some agents send the vouchers as they get them issued, others when all vouchers have been issued so you get them in one envelope.

    Nothing to worry about.

  • Does anyone have anymore news on this? We are supposed to be flying into Cyprus next week with XL (7 of us) for a family holiday/celebration and I am getting rather worried that we will not have flights if things go wrong for XL.

According to the travel press today they are still in negotiations to secure funding for their fuel hedging fund. Currently it is just speculation in the press there is nothing concrete to say they are in a big trouble there are other airlines out there with bigger problems at the moment.

  • Think quite a few people had booked with XL for the West Indies Cricket Tour. There are a few not very happy people knocking about.
  • Just seen this on another site, we are due out to Zante week Sunday with Kosmar who are part of the XL group
    Anyone know anything more

The news that XL Group (that is XL Airways and Freedom Flights) is in severe financial troubles has been all over the news media last weekend and since. It appears that Barclays Bank (one of the financial backers of XL Group) have pulled their support over fuel price hedging - this simply means that the operating costs of the airline have escalated with the high fuel costs etc AND that Barclays no longer has confidence in the management/leadership of XL. Barclays have called in a firm to explore whether the business and the current debt can be restructured. This is usually the FIRST step, before making a decision whether to put a business into administration. At that point, the business would then be either shut down, sold as a going concern, or possibly broken up. What this would mean for customers... the sad news would be that customers would be at the bottom of the list - with bankers and other investors coming first. In a nut shell, you would then need to make a claim on ATOL for recovery of:

    - either your flight cost, if bought separate from your accommodation,

    or

    - if you bought a 'package holiday' the total holiday cost could be claimed from the ATOL bond.

NOTE: If you bought a 'flight and accommodation' holiday from a company (such as Travel Republic.co.uk who are themselves agents for Freedom Flights - part of XL) - then you would NOT get the total cost back from ATOL as Travel Republic are NOT ATOL protected as they maintain that they do not sell 'package holidays' and therefore do not need an ATOL license). You would get the flight cost back however as the flights were purchased from Travel Republic who were acting as agents of Freedom Flights - so the claim for the cost of the flight would be on Freedom Flights ATOL number.

I believe Barclay's pulled their financing mid-week. The show isn't over and it would be unproductive to speculate on anyone's demise. Best just mitgate..make sure insurance covers airline failure and book with credit cards not debit cards. That goes for all purchases not just xl.
Several operators expressed interest in buying xl airways recently including TUI and Thomas Cook. They have a good fleet of new aircraft of interest to the big IT players.

i`m sure if something is happening to xl airways, somebody would snap it up as a going concern, as they have already stated they have got more bookings for next year than this year, and they have stated this since they pulled there services to the carribean, so things cant be all that bad, and plus one of there companies travelcitydirect, are probably one of the biggest carriers to florida, and lets face it there are always people wanting to go to florida, i dont know why:rolleyes: , i have to say we have just returned from a frtnight in florida, travelled thru tcd, and flew with xl airways and the service from both of them was excellent, so i am pretty sure that somebody will snap them up, as already stated, xl has the youngest fleet of short haul carriers, and from next may the planes they use to go to florida are all brand new,Dave
Take every day as it comes!!
  • Why did you cancel the seats if they are going bust, surely, you get no benefit financially, you just become liable for the cancellation charges which you would not be liable for if you just wait for the administrators to contact you and cancel them for you. If they did go pop, I think they would take a lot of small operators and agents with them! Let's hope they manage to refinance!!
  • geasyjet would buy them for the gatwick slots and US routes.

XL have been struggling for a while and the rumour about the finance rug being pulled is a couple of weeks old.
As Zoom has just impacted, then rumours tend to grow.
