Are these British Gas Prices Correct? Or are they conning me!?

Hi I applied on the 28th July online for the 2009 capped British Gas tariff and they said it had got lost in the system. I spoke to a member of staff today and he said he would honour the 2009 cap and then gave me the North East region prices:

GAS
Up to 670 Kw = 7.092ppKw
Anything after = 2.975pppKw

ELEC
Up to 125kw = 28.494ppKw
Anything after = 11.908ppKw

The weird thing was he said the 2011 capped prices were cheaper (on electricity anyway):

GAS
Up to 670 Kw = 7.563ppKw
Anything after = 3.814pppKw

ELEC
Up to 125kw = 26.909ppKw
Anything after = 11.804ppKw

Does anybody whose got the 2009 prices know if that's correct? If it is correct would I be better sticking with the 2009 as 2011 gas prices are a bit more.

Thanks

  • They are correct.
  • I started a thread a week or so ago warning people who fell for the Martin-led hype of fixing your utility bills that BG are absolutely extracting the urine with their electricity price per kw on the Price Protection 2009! On my expected usage I would have been paying OVER 40% more than on my existing Click 5 tariff. Yes, Click 5 will go up but even BG's appallingly expensive standard tariff (the one that BG base all their fix/cap products on) only saw a rise of 9%!! This is what happens when you get a consumer's champion shouting on gmtv that people HAVE TO CAP NOW. Plyaed right into the greedy energy comapny's hands IMO.

PS I'm sure this post will provoke the usual moronic comment from a long-established self-appointed 'expert' and BG-hugger...

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??
  • Hello

I'm really new to doing a post, but I've just had a British Gas man call at my house, with an exclusive limited offer: "Fix Your Energy Prices Until 30th September 2011." I asked if I could get this offer online (because I would go through a cashback site!!), but it's apparently only offered face to face.

I signed up after checking that there's a cooling off period, just in case I've made a BIG mistake!

Please could anyone advise if this is a good idea???!!

    Thanks for reading!

Never believe what a Doorstep salesmen tells you. Yes it is available to sign up on line and you can make up to £60 through Quidco.

(Adopts Martin's persona for a while). DON'T FALL FOR IT!!!!!! If you REALLY want to fix, there are better deals out there and NEVER sign up on the doorstep! Personally, I don't think fixing is in your interests at the moment, BG in particular are pushing them at the moment, which should make EVERYONE wary. You are fixing based on the most expensive tariff on the market. Don't worry, many people fall for this underhand practice (put the price up massively on the already ridiculously expensive standard tariff then bring out un-competitive fixes which look like a bargain and panic people into committing).

Can someone please explain this to me. I signed up for 2009 fixed tariff as I was scared prices would go up. They did - by 35% I thought. How comes someone on click 5 is not paying 35% more? How much did it increase by? I ws told when I signed up that the fix was at 9% more then the standrd taroff they had at the time - is this nto true then?

Also the new 2011 fixed tariff. I assume this is that the new increased rates so if this better then the fixed to 2008 one? What is the difference in cost between the 2 tarriffs for electricity and gas units? I assume there would be penalty charges to swap to from the 2009 one I am on but was wondering what the new 2011 tariff actually is.Thanks:beer:

Yes you are paying 0.8% more on the increase but you are protected until dec 09. Imo the PG2009 on electricity is a definite saver over the next year and a half. You unit prices are quite good if you look at them. I think you will save but obviously it all depends on how much Click 5 increases in that time. and you got peace of mind, something that a lot of people need and want so that you dont have to trawl the net looking to save a couple of pence

0.8% increase on the standard rate!! You seem fixated on comparing everything with this ridiculously expensive tariff! Only the truly stupid or apathetic are still on that tariff! And some peace of mind  - paying over 40% more than Click 5 immediately. BG 'only' put standard leccy prices up by 9%. The electricity unit price can in no way be described as 'quite good', not by a long chalk. And I have 'looked at them', thank you  . Even the bloke in BG retentions dept was shocked at the figure when I pointed it out to him. Nuff said. You also have to factor in the penalty charges if you wish to move to another supplier as well.

Of course you are being conned.

Why would you want to pay the dearest unit rates in the UK?
