Small query I am flying to DFW for a few days, then flying up to Chicago for more days, flying home from there. LHR/DFW and ORD/LHR are fine for suitcase going in the hold for free but I think DFW/ORD will need paying for to go in the hold, if it does, I’d like to pay upfront, rather than bother at the airport but was not given an option to do so, all flights are with AA and booked at the same time. Does anyone know where I can find an option for the second flight to put/pay for suitcase to go in the hold?

Edit:
Okay it looks like they will ask when I book in online for the flight, if I have a bag that needs checking, so I can do it then but not before I leave the U.K.

Are all your flights booked on one ‘multi city’ ticket? If so, you shouldn’t need to pay anything IME, just as if it were a connecting flight being made on the same day as the initial flight. (Two years ago I flew AA LHR-DFW, next day DFW-RAP, 12 days later RAP-ORD & ORD-LHR, all on one booking with hold luggage included on domestic legs due to being included on transatlantic legs.)

However, if you’ve booked ‘open jaw’ LHR- DFW, ORD-LHR with a separate one way domestic flight between DFW and ORD, then that flight will have different t&c to the outward/return ticket and you probably would have to pay.

Probably best to check with AA.

I’ve just checked back through the emails from AA and on the one with the subject line ‘Your Ticket Confirmation’ and headed ‘eTicket Iitinerary and Receipt Confirmation’, it confirms all the baggage allowances for each flight under the main flight details and payment receipt.

  • I only have one record locator for all three flights, all booked together.

So does it state your baggage allowances on your ticket confirmation?

Small print on the email does not mention it as such. There is a generic LHR/DFW blurb that says 23kg. The check today now has Baggage:CUST next to the DFW/ORD flight whatever CUST means. My US friend has some form of flying status (not sure what good that is nowadays) she certainly should get to stow a bag for free and it mentions people travelling with her also benefit but I would expect that might work if our tickets had been booked by her but I obviously booked my own. She did say she had linked our tickets with AA but from previous experience I’m thinking “good luck with that” and won’t be surprised if when we get to the airport, check-in won’t know anything about it. I’m sure next Tuesday when I book in online for the Wednesday flight I will have the option to add the bag and pay before I get to the airport.

  • Update in case anyone has this question. I did not need to pay for the suitcase on the internal flight, even did Kerb drop at DFW for O'Hare. Flight Locator number was the same for all flights, so linked.

Glad it all worked out ok - that was the same as my experience :)
