British Airways name change policy

We have a family wedding in america this summer, unfortunately one member can no longer go. He already has a ticket which cost around £920, but BA were only willing to refund £130 which is shocking as they can just sell the ticket at full price again. We have another family member who would take the ticket, but on the BA website they say we must cancel and buy another ticket as they only amend spelling mistakes in names and dont actually let you change the name on the flight. Is there another way of changing the name on the flight so someone else can go in his place?

£10.99 online for a legal name change, plus whatever the new passport fee is.
BTW, this isn’t a name change, it’s a passenger change. Subtle difference to avoid speculators buying the cheapest tickets and selling them on.
BA (and all full service airlines) deliberately over sell tickets knowing that some people won’t turn up, so in effect your ticket has already been resold.Legal team on standby0 -

Name changes are something common with low cost carriers (EasyJet, Ryanair) and package holidays. With full service airlines I believe Aer Lingus is the only carrier than offers name changes for a fee.0 -
It’s really not shocking - it’s been this way for a long time and for a number of reasons.
