IPad email problem

I can receive emails on my IPad ok, but cannot send them. Why would this be? Any attempt to send an email results in a message saying it was rejected by the server.

You need to make sure that you have the correct smtp details on your account, but since we don’t know what provider you have we can’t guess

Try this, it might resolve it.

    1. Go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendar and tap on your email account.

    2. Tap on "Account," then go down to the "Outgoing Mail Server" section and tap on "SMTP."

    3. Tap on your Primary Server.

    4. Even though it says "Optional," fill out both user name and password under Outgoing Mail Server.

    5. Tap "Done" in the top right to save your changes.

Let us know how you got on please.

I have just tried your suggestion and then tried to send an email. It failed again, this time saying my user name or password for smtp.talktalk.net is incorrect. As far as I am aware I typed in the correct user name and password, the one used to set up my email account.

Now we know it's talktalk and this is a known problem on iPads, why I'm not sure, try the following:

1.On your iPad home screen tap the Settings icon
    2.Select Passwords & Accounts
    3.Highlight the email account
    4.Tap Delete Account

    Then

5.On your iPad home screen, tap the Settings icon
6.Select Passwords & Accounts on the left-hand side, then tap Add Mail Account.
7.Select Other from the account types, then tap add account
8.Tap Add Mail Account, then complete the following sections:
9.Name - Your name needs to go in here.
    10.Email - Your email address.
11.Password - Remember this is case sensitive.
    12.Click Next to continue
13.A message may appear saying the outgoing server is reserved for 02 and tap Next
14.Now on the final screen, tap Save

Again let us know how you get on please.

Right. Done that. Message received saying username or password for mail.talktalk.net is incorrect.

Looking at the details I have POP account - my name, email address, description my name. Incoming mail server, host mail.talktalk.net, my user name and password. Outgoing mail server smtp.talktalk.net

If above still doesn't work you should also take a look at the link below. This in particular deals with both the outgoing and incoming sides of the protocol and the server side. If the incoming setting is not correct then you will get the problem your having.

Thanks for the Talktalk link. Checking the settings info, I have all the correct details except for the incoming server port - they say it should be 995, I have 110, which works perfectly as I have no problem receiving emails. I checked my email settings on my Kindle Fire tablet, which are identical to the IPad settings, and I can send and receive emails ok on the Kindle, so maybe this is a problem peculiar to IPads?

I have saved the link in my favourites list as I may end up contacting Talktalk about this. Thank you very much for your help.

    Your welcome.

I will look around to see if anything comes to mind, It could be as you say an iPad issue. Don't know why that should be but it seems to have been a known issue for some time. The POP3 settings and IMAP settings can be quite finicky. I would suggest you try setting the iPad up as an IMAP account and see if that works. Meanwhile keep us posted on how you get on please.

I had excactly the same problem with Plusnet, from working correctly to just stopping sending emails. On my other devices no problem, this went on for about a month where I fiddled with the mail settings on my Ipad, after searching online forums for advice and with them advising me to do all that I had already done then suddenly all started to work normally. I still cannot work out why, what, when or how. I suspect it was my ISP.
