Who pays for ATOL protection?

I was looking to book a short city break - hotel and flight (Europe) with Secret Escapes. When I got to the payment page it showed a £5 charge for ATOL protection. Should I be paying this?

It seems a small price to pay for piece of mind,how much was the Atol protection compared to the booking.
Whilst i do not know the legal answer i am sure if the holiday goes t---s up you will rue not paying £5 at the time.0 -
The legal answer is that ATOL protection is £2.50 per person, some operators show it separately but it should have been included in the price you saw to begin with and not added as a last minute hidden fee0
