is income support paid in arrears?

Options
Hi,
My partner went back to work this week, after 7 years off sick (yippeee!) I wrote to the incapacity and income support departments to say he was returning to work and sent the letters two weeks ago recorded delivery. I applied for tax credits from 27th August.
I was expecting to get about £40 in the bank on Saturday to cover Sat and Suns benefits before pay and tax credits took over on Monday. Instead we had £500. Are these benefits paid in arrears (last 2 weeks money)? I thought we were paid in advance, so assumed we have had it already. I havent spent it in case its a mistake and we have to pay it back, but it would be handy as we get back on feet and pay our own rent again!

Always in arrears. You've just had what you're entitled to. Nice surprise for you though!
Good luck with the work. Have you checked if you can still get some Housing Benefit and Council Tax benefit? Or if you can claim any sort of "run-on" (sometimes you can get a 4 week "run-on" of HB & CTB)

thanks, fantastic! Weve applied for the hb and ctax run ons, so we should have a "breather gap" but depends how long it takes our tax credits to come through -its not a very well paid job- but it is a job, and I am very happy! Just knowing weve got an extra £500 helps a lot.

incapacity is non-means tested. does this mean he can still get this?>:

I dont think so - although its been awarded for another year, I assumed that as hes working, he'd be considered fit for work and not entitled anymore? I know they have to keep our case open for a few months in case the job doesn't work out.

my boyfriend can only work a few hours a week due to a serious accident a few years ago. He has finally got a large settlement (although this is for loss of wages now and future), and was surprised to be told he could still get incapacity. maybe the tax credit will replace though
  • Hi!I'm wondering if someone can advice me! My story is:I have been off long term sick leave since March of this year and been trying to cope with living off SSP from the work since May of this year. Which works out to be approx. £72 a week. I am waiting to hear if I qualify for Disibility money, and have been for over two months! I have went through treatment for aggresive breast cancer last year and it has left its mark! My mobility can be bad and my bones in my legs hurt all the time. The doctor from the DWP confirmed that I have sustained damage from the Chemo to my legs and my breathing from the Radiation I received. Could someone tell me if I have a chance of qualifying for income support as I live alone and have no other salary coming into the home as I live alone. I have never applied for benefits before in my life until I took ill, so I have no idea what I could quality for?.Thank You.

Skips mum, I think that your husband is entitled to an Incapacity Benefit run-on of £84 a week for a year. Check with your benefits office.

There is no such thing as Incapacity Benefit run-on of £84 for a year. Depending on the area and circumstances there may be a £40 per week payment for a year.

If you do permitted work you can work no more than 16 hours a week and earn up to £89 for 52 weeks, unless you do what is called supported permitted work via a job broker like shaw trust then you can do it for ever.
