Confusion Over Enhanced Disability Premium

Hi, I was just having a discussion with a friend about ESA as my friend may soon be making a claim for it. It brought up a question, my husband is on CB ESA & in the support group, on our housing benefit award letter it states an amount for Enhanced Disability Premium, my friend says this is an Income Related premium we will be receiving in our ESA?
I don't remember seeing that in our letter from ESA, which I can't find now, I looked online and became confused as one thread said housing benefit assume the premium has been claimed?
Should we have actually claimed this or is it decided at the beginning of the ESA decision? We have never been told we can receive cold weather payments as a result of having the premium which I know you're supposed to get if you do receive any income related benefit?

Thanks in advance

He would need to apply for the premium, which is income based. You can get it if you claim ESA and are in the support group, or receive income based benefits and receive HRC DLA.

  • We were never told this! Hubby has been receiving the ESA since May 2012, we assumed whatever he was entitled to he would be given, originally the claim was a migration from IB and having attended the ATOS medical and having been awarded ESA Support Group contribution based. Apparently they awarded it for 2 years so we may be called for it to be reviewed in May 14, because he hasn't applied for the Enhanced Disability Premium do you recommend doing it this late in the claim? Should he get any backpay? How would he claim it?

    Cheers again.
  • Do you have any other household income?

It is a pity you did not follow up on your thread from March.
  • We rang up jobcentre plus early days and they said as we were on contribution based ESA that's what our entitlement was. We assumed if we were getting a premium, it must be included in the amount already, no-one said get this ir that form and put in a claim, I find all of it confusing, housing benefit includes it but from what I remember of the initial ESA letter it didn't mention premiums, that's why we've left things as they are until this discussion with our friend, it's re-surfaced, I'm still unclear as to if there is some sort of paperwork we should've asked for?

We don't have any other income.. cheers
  • are you on your husbands ESA claim? He migrated from IB were you on IB with a top up of Income Support?
f you are not on the claim do you work and if so how many hours?
    or have savings over 16k??

Then you will be getting the EDP premium now in your ESA award

He is claiming ESA conts, in the sport group with a ESA IB top for you.

As he is in the support group you will automatically get the EDP premium......
    the system will award it
  • Thanks to all for the replies, we definitely haven't had a breakdown of ESA components in our original letter saying we have any income related add ons, as far as we were aware it was all contribution based, should hubby receive cold weather payments as he never had any in the last cold weather payment period?
  • No unfortunately I don't think he is entitled to the cold weather payments. Even though you get income based ESA for your part of the claim he get ESA conts for his part and this is not a condition of entitlement for CWPs.
You could ring and check but as they are paid automatically now if you have been on ESA for over a year you would of got some last year
