Which tablet?

Hi, I'm posting on behalf of my mam who's wanting to get my brother a tablet computer for Christmas, although she hasn't really got a clue what they are and I don't know much more!

My brother would probably mainly use it for Internet browsing - he has an iPhone and uses that at the mo. He works away from home and doesn't have any other form of computer. I'm not sure if there's wifi where he lives (RAF base), but I assume he could get 3G enabled if he wanted to? My mam just wants to buy him the tablet and then anything else he can add himself.

What would be the best one to go for? I think she only wants to spend about £150 tops, is that enough to get something good? If it would be much more then I could add a bit extra and make it a joint present, but I know she would prefer to get it herself if she could talk my dad into spending a bit extra!

Any help appreciated, thanks :)

  • You need to find out what screen size would suit him first. There's a 7" one in Tesco with good spec for about £120, 1.5GHz quad-core and expandable 16GB HDD from memory.

I'm not sure tbh, I think she's thinking of something iPad sized? Although I've just realised that these probably come in different sizes now so that doesn't help! Maybe one that's big enough to watch programmes on I player etc?

Thanks, I'll take her into Tesco and we'll have a look. He's not particularly tech savvy so it won't need all the bells and whistles.

Yep, there's an Ipad Mini too, I think.
You can use a Micro HDMI to HDMI cable to connect the Hudl up to a bigger screen.
If you have Tesco vouchers I think you can double them up on the exchange scheme.

  • Hi All,
I'm also in a similar dilemma. Want to get a tablet for hubby for xmas. Was all set to get hudl, but am now debating samsung galaxy 2.
He's not massively tech savvy, and tbh hasn't actually asked for a tablet. But he currently carries netbook each day so he can log on and do his emails in between his split shift. He commutes for about 40mins on the train each way so thought a tablet would be nice as he could also use on a busy train (something he can't do with notebook) as well as check his emails/browse internet during his break. He doesn't actually send a lot of emails/type much (mainly just short messages) so think a 7" would be fine.
I don't know much about technology at all - but is the hudl generally considered to be the best at that price range?
    Thanks!

It depends how much you want things to "just work".

While this doesn't match your question exactly, it is important to chose an eco-system.

Microsoft, Apple or Google are the main providers. While they are all interchangable, you will find sticking with one works best.

If you have a gmail address then Android is a good system to use.
If you have an outlook.com address, pick a Windows based tablet. Google have made things difficult for Windows Phone and Tablet users, while Microsoft are trying to allow people in Android to use their services.
Apple will work with either and are surprisingly neutral in this battle.

Apple or a Microsoft Surface would be my recommendation. Less settings and easier to use.
  • Could I join this thread please?

My 14 year old daughter wants a tablet for Xmas.

I also want to get one for my 4 year old son. He's autistic & is rather taken with my husbands iPad. He doesn't really play with toys so this is the only thing to buy him.

    Many thanks.
  • Thanks anotheruser - he uses hotmail and yahoo mail. I think he'll mainly use for ebay/reading the news/general internet browsing really. So just after something that isn't too slow and is easy to use

I use the website (not the mail app) for my hotmail.com (old name for outlook.com) email on my iPad, is it not possible to do the same on Android? If so, that's pants!

Which tablet: I have an iPad. I *love* the walled garden nature of the Apple App Store compared to the Wild West of the Android App Store. I love the plug&play nature of iOS - buy it in the shop, turn it on, it works. No need to faff around plugging it in to a PC (unless you want to back it up), no need for antivirus, no fiddling with settings to get it to work. If someone's not very computer literate I'd recommend an iPad.

I bought an iPad a few weeks after launch, when there weren't really any tablet PCs. I later got an iPhone as my first smartphone, as I already had an iPad.
However if I didn't already have an iPad and iPhone, and I was buying my first tablet PC today, I am sure I wouldn't buy an iPad because I hate Apple fanboys. But they've got me now, I can never escape :(
  • HI guys
Sorry for not catching all your names. I bought a tablet form a company called Ebellking.
There has been some bad reviews and good about this company. But i've had nothing but excellent service.
I initially bought our 14 yr old a tablet ( Ployer momo speed 11 ) for last Christmas. After she opened it and I played around i ordered another for my birthday. I've got to say this is a good quality tablet for all the usual stuff.
There are cheaper tablets on this website but for me the ployer has everything. At a good price.

I am currently looking at the Tesco site at the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, but can't work out if it has a slot for an SD card (I am not very tech savvy). There are promo codes for tablets at Tesco at the moment though on Martins main landing page. So use them before you buy everyone.

Here is the link to the voucher code:
