Travelex Cash Passport from Tesco - advice?

Hi,
We have a last minute break booked and haven't sorted our Euro currency. Read about this card which is apparently available for collection straight away from Travelex - and Tesco's website say they offer it at their in store travel bureaux.
Just wondering how it works if anyone can help please? I think you pre-load it with however much Euros you want and can then use this at ATM to make free withdrawals and also to pay for shopping/restaurant etc.
It says you "lock in your exchange rate at the time of purchase" which sounds good.
What I'm not sure about is can you "cash in" any balance left on the card when you return from your holiday or are you stuck with having to leave the Euro value on the card for future spending?
I understand there is no charge for the card or for loading it with Euros - pls can anyone confirm?
Many thanks in advance.

Your bank card may charge you separately for loading the card. Which bank cards do you hold? Best to pay in cash at Tesco.
The charge from Tesco/Travelex relates to the rate given against the full Mastercard exchange rate.0 -
Hi TakeThis,
Many thanks for your reply. Thanks for that advice re the charge for loading the Passport Card, I hadn't thought of that at all - will take cash out from ATM when I go to Tesco to avoid this charge.
Does anyone happen to know if any left over Euros after holiday end can be withdrawn to convert back into Sterling and pay back into bank account? Wouldn't want it left sitting on card ideally.
Many thx again.0 -
From the Travelex site.

If you have a more suitable debit card for loading the Prepaid card and can pick up the card from one of the available Travelex sites, I would recommend taking the Cash Passport Globe instead.
Getting it via TopCashBack and choosing the GLOBE option when choosing a currency card, will get you 0.5% of your initial load refunded.
With the GLOBE card your money stays in Pounds(in addition you get a better exchange rate), so you can withdraw the remainder out via ATM once at home and/or use any scraps for your shopping etc.
The Tesco/Travelex Euro option is not bad, but the combination of changing Euros back to Pounds, plus any cash out fee can cut into your initial savings.0 -
One thing to be aware of with these cards is attempting to pay for something in a shop etc with it.
In Spain you must have another form of ID with you when using a credit card (for locals it's normally their ID card) as an anti-fraud measure. They check that the name on the ID matches the name on the credit card. Unfortunately Travelex cards do not have your name on and will be rejected.

I've never ever been asked for ID when using a credit card in Spain in shops ranging from Springfield to Il Cortes Ingles to a local souvenir shop in 20 years of visiting Spain
Over the past few years I have used my travelex card in the remotest of Basque villages at a Mercadona and had no issues or ever been rejected0 -
Hi Take This,
Many thanks for your further reply. We're very short on time (hols booked very last minute!) but the Cash Passport Globe sounds like a very good option for when we have more time to get one of these in advance.0 -

I failed completely in Salamanca, even at the big ones like Carrefour. My daughter has been there 6 months and hasn't found anywhere yet that will take it without matching ID
I guess it depends on the assistant at the time.
The Carrefour at La Marina (near Benidorm/La Cala) never asked me in 2 years of living there0 -

You only need four hours notice. The only caveat being that you need to be within reach of one of the pickup points.0
