www.helppconline.com SCAM?!?!?!

These guys called me about an hour ago claiming that my computer had sent them an error message and that it needed action taking immediately. The woman with an Indian accent sounded like she was in a busy call centre. She said they needed to access my computer remotely and fix the problem. My dad had exactly the same phone call a few days ago (luckily he hung up on them) and although there are a couple of glitches on my MAC at the moment, it isn't something that has been reported (we always click 'no' when it says do you want to send an error report) as my husband works in IT and can sort it out himself! After stringing them along for a while, I asked for the name of the company which I had to really push for, then asked for a contact phone number. She said that I couldn't have a phone number, but to go to their website www.helppconline.com and click on the contact details. I politely told her that there was no way I was giving her remote access to my computer and that she should remove me from her calling/mailing list immediately. The problem is that computers are always getting glitches, and there are far too many people who would go along with this type of scam and give their bank details out too. People need to be made more aware of these types of calls/scams before they get dragged in! Who should these kind of calls be reported to??? The police will say there has been no damage to a computer so it's not worth taking action for. When you dial 1471 it either comes back as not available or an international number.

Maybe report to trading standards ? I suspect there's no-one that can really do much about them as they'll be based overseas. However posting like you have will raise the issue higher in search engine rankings so maybe people will find it and read about it more easily.

I've just received one of these calls, from a call centre based in India. The caller claimed to be from Microsoft and he stated I had a computer virus. He attempted to get me to run a code, probably to dupe me into thinking I had a virus. I attempted to get some information out of him to identify his company, or him as an individual. Not successful there, but I've e-mailed the Indian Business Council to ask them what they're doing about this scam. I believe it's been going on for some years and they do know about it.

Sadly, this scam has been going on for years. Equally sadly, a lack of awareness of it looks like going on even longer.
• I generally tell them i either haven't got a computer ( to which i am met by silence cause their script doesn't cover that) or the last persons computer i gave remote access to, set on fire!! Then i hang up and treat myself to a coffee and a smile :)
• Hi, unfortunatly I know someone who has been hit by this scam, can anyone give advice as to what to do to get rid of helppconline.com being in apparent control of their laptop? The person is also concerned that they could access their bank account and may have kept their card details also? Seeing as they have already spent £79.99 I was trying to find a way of them not spending any more money in trying to sort this problem out. Just so happened at the time they called and offered this service they were already waiting for a call from Sky Broadband about their internet connection! Convenient!!

tell your friends to get a brain transplant and not answer phones if the other person does not have a british accent.

lol the word 'con' is in their website address.
• Yes they're at it again, I just got a call this evening from a call centre in India, claiming they have received reports from my ISP regarding my PC's performance, would I like them to take a look and help me fix the problems. No chance! I would like to know how they got my phone number though. The nice Indian man gave me a telephone number 0808 280 2560 which is on their website as well as info@helppconline.com They should pick their intended victims more carefully, I'm in IT!
• I had one of these and had fun stringing them along.

Told them I had several computers- which was at fault?
Then said 'hold on it will take a while to switch them all on'.
....and I went and did some gardening, came back 30 mins later and said ' sorry, can't talk now I'm busy'
