Moving from Income support to JSA???

Hi,

My girlfriend is 24 with an 11 month old boy, she is told her income support will stop when he turns 1 and she will be put on JSA. She is currently living at home with her parents.

She has however found a private tenancy flat to rent which she is told housing benefits will cover to the tune of £400. She is also actively seeking work but having problems finding work which offers the required 20+ which she can also balance with childcare,

My question is that if she moved into this flat tomorrow can she continue to claim housing benefit on he flat when her little boy turns 1 and she is moved onto JSA?

Many Thanks :)

Who told her that? She won't cease to be entitled to IS because of her son's age

I thought the transition from IS to JSA was when the child turned 7?
from 25 October 2010, if your youngest child is aged seven or over, or will be seven in the next year, your Income Support may stop during that year if you are only claiming it because you are a lone parent

Jobcentre Plus will contact you eight weeks before your Income Support is due to stop to tell you when your last payment is due. Jobcentre Plus will also invite you to an interview with an adviser, who will explain what you need to do to make a claim for another benefit if you have not found paid work.

whoever told her the IS stops at 1 year old is wrong. i have a 2 year old and im on IS. its when the youngest child turns 7 though there was word of it being lowered to when the youngest child starts school so age 4 or 5.

Ok that's interesting so what would be the situation be for her with housing benefits, obviously she can claim that along with the IS, She has found a flat and the bonus is it's owned by a friend.

she would be entitled to a certain amount of HB but the amount varies by location and number of bedrooms you are entitled to. since she has 1 child she would be entitled to a 2 bedroom and check your loal councils website for the rates in your area.

For private lets you have to claim Local Housing Allowence, i think the council sets the rates

    Can be checked here

(i.e. could i give priority to the G.F and her little boy whilst covering the rent with her housing benefit)?" Iamdave 15/4/2011
