Thomson Travel Money Prepaid MasterCard

I'm going to Madeira on 17 June and have seen one of these advertised by Thomsons, who I booked my holiday with, and am thinking about getting one as I heard prepaid cards are now the best way to pay when abroad. My concern is will it be accepted in most retailers, restaurants etc? Thomsons charge 2 Euros per cash withdrawal from atms. Any advice please? Thanks, Bo.

Lots of threads on pre-paid cards, e.g. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/32365660

The short answer is stay away from it. A decent option is the Travelex Cash Passport Globe0

Great thanks, think I'll apply for one then:)0

Agreed, don't bother with the Thompson card. A friend got one and asked me to top it up for him. Endless problems finding what number you need from the card to top it up. Have to pay in CASH to a black hole (the Thompson shop can't verify whose account the 10-digit number you give them points to). And to cap it all, I could find out his PIN number from the Internet service! The olny reason he got it was someone scared him about how insecure credit cards are what with skimming and so on. Rubbish. This Thompson card is as insecure and fragile as they come, and an expensive way to spend money!0

We have just returned from lanzarote where we took a per paid card on the advise of the travel agent and we also took some euros to. We still have £300 left on the card as it didn't work!
We used it once in a hotel with the chip and pin and after that we could not use it! The only time we could use it was at the spa shops where they swipe it and even then they are not happy about it! Restaurants refused to use it as they wanted proof that is was ours as the cards don't have your name on them! So of course u can't prove its yours!
I will never ever ever get one of these as a lot of people we talked to have had problems some even to the point where they couldn't even swipe the card.
My advise Stay WELL AWAY!0
